American Express Recognizes Oak View Elementary Volunteer

Betty McCarn spends four hours every day helping out wherever she’s needed

Nearly every day, the staff at Oak View Elementary can count on a little extra help. That’s because Betty McCarn lends a helping hand to assist however needed, whether tutoring small groups, helping with time-consuming clerical duties, grading papers or listening to students read. Her daily presence not only helps her build a real bond with the children, but it also helps the teacher focus on lesson plans.

“She is the kindest, most dedicated volunteer,” said Oak View Principal Heather Bare. “She is faithful to come every day and will do anything asked. There’s no doubt about it - our students and staff just love Mrs. McCarn!”

District officials surprised McCarn with Volunteer of the Month honors in a brief ceremony at the school. As Volunteer of the Month, McCarn received a gift bag and $25 gift card from American Express, which has generously partnered with Guilford County Schools (GCS) to support the volunteer recognition program. Her photo will hang at Oak View as well as the district’s central offices. In addition, the Guilford County Board of Education will recognize her at its May 12 meeting.
