This school year, Guilford County Schools (GCS) and other North Carolina school districts have been required by the state to return millions of dollars in funding. In total, the state has reduced GCS’ budget by $9,437,446 for the 2008-09 year.
Earlier this month, the state asked GCS to return about $2 million, on top of the $2.8 million the district returned to the state back in December. Additionally, the state used lottery funding and Public School Building Capital Fund (PSBCF) dollars to balance the state budget, taking away approximately $2.9 million earmarked for GCS.
Moreover, all employees are taking a 0.5 percent pay cut between now and June 30 through the flexible furlough plan issued by the state.
The reversions tally more than $9 million. Although GCS has tried to limit the impact on students, the truth is that nearly 80 percent of GCS resources are tied directly to the schools.
“Unfortunately, GCS has not been immune to the state’s financial crisis,” said Chief Financial Officer Sharon Ozment. “It has been a tough year, and you can’t cut $9 million and not feel it. However, our staff has worked hard despite the cuts to make sure all students receive a quality education.”
