When voters approved the 2008 School Bonds, they added more than 6,500 new student seats helping to relieve overcrowding. The prioritized list of 27 projects includes five new schools, upgrades outdated heating and air conditioning systems and adds new special education facilities.
The first new school, Eastern High, opened doors to students on April 20. Crews are now breaking down the pod village and removing them from the site. While students are on summer vacation, crews will construct tennis courts and practice fields.
With land purchased from the 2003 School Bonds, construction at Jamestown Middle began quickly. Structural steel and masonry walls are being erected, bar joists are set and grading continues on the site. Once completed in the fall of 2010, the school will hold more than 1,000 students.
When students move to the new Jamestown Middle, the old school will become part of the Ragsdale High campus, which will undergo its own renovation and see the addition of a new gym and media center. The Ragsdale Building Advisory Team is meeting regularly and reviewing the architect’s schematic designs. In addition, a special planning group is exploring design considerations for the Autism facility.
Guilford County Commissioners approved the purchase of property for a western-area special education center, and construction drawings and documents are being reviewed by permitting agencies. The Building Advisory Team has been meeting regularly to provide input in the construction process, and construction on the new facility will begin shortly.
In order to increase efficiency, the projects at Southeast High and Southeast Middle were bundled. With the architect’s schematic designs complete, plans are underway to relocate mobile classrooms to make room for construction. The design process features 40 percent participation by minority and women business enterprises (MWBEs). Both schools will receive new media centers, and the high school will build new classrooms and a gymnasium addition. The middle school will see a new auxiliary gym and dining room and the conversion of the old media center into classroom space.
