Students at Murphey Traditional Academy chanted, “Kiss that chicken! Kiss that chicken!” Friday as the school’s principal, Richard Thomae, prepared to fulfill a promise.
“I promised you guys at the beginning of the year that I’d put on a chicken suit and kiss a chicken if Murphey students would continue to be one of the top three schools in attendance or improve our attendance record over last year this time,” Thomae said in front of a cheering crowd of students.
And kiss a chicken he did. Murphey students filed into the cafeteria Friday afternoon carrying signs in anticipation of the fulfillment of the long awaited promise. Thomae put on a chicken suit, led the students in the “Chicken Dance” and kissed a live chicken to celebrate the high attendance record.
Last month, the school recorded a 97.1 percent attendance record, making it one of the top elementary schools in attendance. In previous months, attendance was as high as 98 percent a month.
