Not even scorching temperatures could stop 32 speedy students from tying up their laces and giving their best to claim the title of Fastest Kid in Guilford County. Guilford County Schools, along with Nike Outdoor Nationals and the National Scholastic Sports Foundation, found the fastest elementary school boy and girl, as well as the fastest middle school boy and girl at the fifth annual Fastest Kid competition at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (N.C. A&T) State University Friday.

Kendi Harris from Alamance Elementary took the elementary girls title, while Paisley Simmons from Welborn Middle was the quickest middle school girl.

On the boys’ side, Bill Flumo from Sedgefield Elementary outran the elementary pack. The middle school boys race was the closest of the evening, with only thousandths of a second separating the top two. After reviewing the instant replay, Davidson Arrington of Guilford Middle narrowly edged out Ramone Ramsey from Kernodle. Both ran the 100 meters in 11.93 seconds.

The event kicked off on Thursday with a clinic open to all students led by Cedric Walker, member of several national championship and Olympic management and coaching staffs, and members of N.C. A&T’s track team. The clinic was followed by preliminaries, with more than 150 children attempting to claim the title of Fastest Kid in Guilford County. At the finals on Friday, all participants received medals, and the race winners received trophies for their hard work. In addition, race winners received tickets to the UniverSoul Circus.
