Guilford County Schools to Celebrate Excellence

The district will announce the Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year on Monday

Guilford County Schools (GCS) will hold its annual Celebration of Excellence event Monday at the War Memorial Auditorium. During the event, which is sponsored by Businesses for Excellence in Education, the district will recognize the 16 most improved schools and also announce the GCS Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year.

Guests will begin walking down the red carpet at about 4 p.m., with the program starting at 4:30 p.m. The event will include student performances. The most improved schools will each receive a check for more than $9,600 and a banner to hang at the school.

The winning Teacher of the Year will receive $1,000 and will represent teachers across the district at various local and state events. GCS also will name an elementary, middle and high school teacher of the year, all receiving $500. The two runners-up will receive $300 each. The winning teacher will receive a total of $1,500: $1,000 for winning the overall award and $500 for winning at their grade level. In addition to the cash awards, all finalists will receive a plaque.

Teacher of the Year finalists are Jennifer Caligan, Nathanael Greene Elementary, Darren Corbett, Grimsley High, Joan Kimmel, Weaver Academy, Terri Roberts, Southwest Elementary and Deanna Wynn, Southern Middle.

The winning principal will receive $1,000 and will represent principals across the district at various local and state events. GCS also will name an elementary and secondary principal of the year, both receiving $500. The three runners-up will receive $300 each. The winning principal will receive a total of $1,500: $1,000 for winning the overall award and $500 for winning at their grade level. In addition to the cash awards, all finalists will receive a plaque.

Principal of the Year finalists are Geraldine Russ-Cox, Rankin Elementary , Edwina Monroe, Falkener Elementary , Patrice Brown, Archer Elementary, Anna Brady, Grimsley High and Cheri Keels, Triangle Lake Montessori.
