The Guilford County Board of Education approved plans for the district’s 10 low performing schools during its meeting Thursday. These comprehensive plans include the measures schools will take for improvement and the support the district will provide.
The plans were drafted with input from principals, regional superintendents, board members and the school communities. They include improvements in teaching and learning, parental involvement, rigor and collaboration. They also define the additional support schools will receive from district departments, including Human Resources, English as a Second Language, Exceptional Children, Professional Development and Curriculum and Instruction.
As an important part of the plans, all faculty and staff members within the schools will be placed on a full-cycle evaluation process this year in which they will receive ongoing feedback on their job performance. The evaluations will identify areas of improvement, and staff members will receive support on ways to improve their performance.
The schools identified as low performing within the district are Fairview Elementary, Gillespie Park Elementary, Hampton Leadership Academy, Montlieu Math and Science Academy, Oak Hill Elementary, Parkview Elementary, Hairston Middle, Andrews High, Dudley High and Eastern High.
The North Carolina ABCs of Public Education require school districts to develop plans for improvement for all schools designated as low performing. Low performing schools are those that failed to meet their expected growth standards and have less than 50 percent of their students' scores at or above Achievement Level III. In 2008-09, about 75 percent of the district’s schools made expected growth on the ABCs. Ten schools were named Honor Schools of Excellence.
The district posted the plans during their development on each school’s Web site and within schools for public comment by the school communities. The plans approved by the board will be submitted to the Department of Public Instruction for final approval and will be enacted within schools immediately.
“If we truly believe that all children and all staff members have the capacity to be excellent, and I believe we do, then we must also agree that the current level of achievement is simply unacceptable,” said Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green. “We cannot continue to do more of the same and expect different results. My expectations are much higher. I believe that each of our low performing schools has the capacity to be excellent as well. This year has to be different. “ To view the plans for the low performing school, click on the link below.
