GCS Releases 2008-09 Reportable Crime and Suspension Data

State reportable offenses declined by 15 percent during the 2008-09 school year

Data released by Guilford County Schools (GCS) shows reductions in reportable crimes, long-term suspensions and short-term suspensions for the 2008-09 school year. The district’s submission of data to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction will be part of a statewide report due for release later this year.

Reportable crimes were down approximately 15 percent for GCS to 545 acts in 2008-09. The most common violations – possession of a controlled substance and possession of a weapon (excluding firearms and explosives) – declined by 14 percent and 15 percent respectively. A total of 45 reportable crimes occurred in elementary schools. In middle schools, 150 offenses occurred, and 350 occurred in high schools.

Short-term suspensions lasting up to 10 days decreased slightly by less than 1 percent, while long-term suspensions of more than 10 days for more serious offenses showed a larger decline, down 59 percent from 2007-08.

The district’s report to the state contains only the offenses that must be reported under state law. The Safe Schools Act requires school districts to report specific types of crime and violence to the State Board of Education, which has identified 17 criminal acts that are included in an annual report, 10 of which are considered dangerous and violent. Only 17 of the district’s reportable crimes fell into the dangerous and violent category.

School districts were required to collect crime and suspension data by June 30. Those statistics were checked by the Department of Public Instruction and will be released officially in a report by the State Board of Education.
