AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is available in a growing number of Guilford County middle and high schools. AVID prepares underachieving, disadvantaged students for college eligibility and success. The focus is on students who have not previously been successful in a college preparatory path, but have the intellectual potential to succeed.

Each participating school offers an AVID class which students attend each day. The classes focus on writing, college and careers and strategies for success. Two days each week, the class is dedicated to tutorials in which students participate in collaborative study groups, writing groups and Socratic Seminars. Motivational activities, field trips speakers and media center experiences are regularly provided for the students.

A key element of AVID program is the structured note-taking process students learn. They also learn test-taking skills and other strategies that enhance their chances of success in school.

National statistics show that over 90% of AVID graduates enroll in college and that they persist at an 89% rate. Over 60% of the AVID graduates enroll in four-year colleges.
