College Tech Prep Program Development Model Business Councils’ Sub-Committee Task List

Roles of the College Tech Prep Business Councils Chaired by Local Business  Representatives

Curriculum Committee/College Tech Prep Course of Study:

I. Define Needs of Industry

  • Collect Labor Market Information
  • Review Anticipated Industry Trends
  • Determine Occupational Categories
  • Determine Skill Levels Required

II. Establish Program Design

  • Develop Mission Statement
  • Define Program Content for Secondary and Postsecondary Levels
  • Analyze, Select and/or Create Appropriate Curricula
  • Develop Sample 4-year Courses of Study/Schedules Detailing Academic and Technical Course Sequences/Requirements that Articulate with Postsecondary Components
  • Establish Articulation Agreements
  • Establish a Work-Based Learning Plan

III. Analyze and Provide Instructional Resources

  • Determine Facilities and Equipment Requirements
  • Determine Faculty Qualifications
  • Define Responsibilities of GCS, GTCC, Industry, etc.
  • Select School/Campus

Industry Recruitment Committee:

I. Develop Industry Commitments

  • Maintain Program Standards
  • Maintain Selection Standards for Students Apprenticeship
  • Provide Trained Mentors
  • Maintain Department of Labor Apprenticeship Standards
  • Provide Tuition Reimbursement/Scholarships for Postsecondary Education
  • Commit to a Work-Based Learning Continuum
  • Identify and recruit Sponsors
  • Assist with Acquisition of Specialized Equipment, If Required

II. Interview Student Youth Apprenticeship Applicants

  • Establish Criteria & Entrance/Continuance Requirements for Work-Based Learning Components (Apprenticeship)
  • Develop Application, Interview and Selection Process

Marketing Committee:

I. Marketing & Public Relations

  • Develop Promotional Materials (Brochures, Forms, Presentations, and videos)
  • Prepare Information Packet for Prospective Students
  • Develop Information Packet for Parents, Teachers, Counselors, Media
  • Prepare Strategy for Youth Apprenticeship Selection (Dates, Times, Speakers)
  • Prepare Parent Presentation
  • Prepare "Kick-Off" Strategy (Dinner, Media, etc.)
  • Establish Procedure for Recruiting Future Students (Middle School)

Roles of Guilford County Schools and Guilford Technical Community College:

  • Establish Coordination Responsibilities
  • Develop Timeline
  • Provide Curriculum, Lab and Instructional Equipment
  • Employ Qualified Faculty
  • Define Role of Contact at Each School
  • Provide Professional Development
  • Establish Student Transportation Plan
