Lewis Ferebee was the key architect in building the district’s new regional model. Ferebee was named one of five regional superintendents for Guilford County Schools (GCS) on April 7, 2009. He will lead the Enrichment Region, which includes nine schools that need intensive support.
Ferebee has quickly achieved success for the schools and students of Guilford County. He began his career in education when he taught at the elementary level for Newport News Public Schools. He moved into an administrative position as an assistant principal in Granville County Schools before joining GCS in 2001.
As principal of Fairview Elementary, a school where more than 96 percent of students were eligible for free and reduced priced lunches, Ferebee promptly made strides in improving the school’s academics. While at Fairview, the school met 100 percent of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for four consecutive years. He moved Fairview from a North Carolina end-of-grade testing performance composite that was slightly above low-performing status of 50 percent to a composite proficiency level of 78.6 percent.
From Fairview, Ferebee moved to Hairston Middle and served as principal from 2005-07. At Hairston, he continued to improve test scores and teacher morale and also initiated an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. After four consecutive years as a GCS Principal of the Year nominee, Ferebee earned the title in 2006.
Prior to leading the regionalization efforts for GCS, he served as an instructional improvement officer, serving as the chief instructional leader and manager for a division of 13 schools, several of which offer magnet or choice options.
Ferebee earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from North Carolina Central University and his master’s degree from The George Washington University. He is currently completing his dissertation on No Child Left Behind school choice for his doctorate of education in educational administration and supervision from East Carolina University.
Ferebee, a native of Columbia, S.C., and his wife, Dr. Edye Ferebee, have one son, Bryce, who is a pre-K student at Washington Montessori.
