Phyllis Martin, an experienced public school administrator with a demonstrated track record of 18 years, was named one of five regional superintendents for Guilford County Schools on April 7, 2009. She leads the Southeastern Region.
Martin previously served the district as an instructional improvement officer, overseeing nine schools, more than 5,000 students, 540 licensed staff members and an instructional budget of $40 million.
Martin has served as principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels and has had success in each one. At Dudley High, Martin supervised the first Early College Academy in the district. Dudley led the district with the most academic scholarships – 400 – for the graduating class of 2008. For the 2007-08 school year, Dudley increased student proficiency scores in Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, U.S. history, civics and economics, biology and writing.
While Martin was principal of Jackson Middle, the school was recognized as one of the most improved middle schools during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 school years. Under Martin’s leadership at Cone Elementary, the performance composite scores went from 42 percent to 73 percent. Cone was recognized for four consecutive years beginning in 1998 as one of the most improved turnaround schools in the state.
Martin, a native of Greensboro, received a Bachelor of Science degree in speech and theater education and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling education both from North Carolina A&T State University. She earned her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Martin and her husband, Isaac, have one daughter, Toi.
