History of Wiley Elementary School
Calvin Henderson Wiley, founder of Wiley Elementary, was born February 3, 1819 to David L. and Anne Woodburn Wiley. He attended the Caldwell Institute of Greensboro as well as UNC-Chapel Hill. Wiley graduated with highest honors in 1840. Among his achievements, he became the first Superintendent of Public Instruction in North Carolina, organized a State Teacher's Association for the exchange of progressive ideas, and he became the first native novelist with the publication of Alamance or the Final Experiment. Located in southeast Greensboro, Wiley Elementary School has an enrollment of approximately 330 students, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Our staff includes 15 classroom teachers, 7 assistants, and 23 support staff. Wiley has two pre-kindergartens. The older children are supported by Community in Schools as well as the Big Brother / Big Sister Program. Wiley is proud to have Evonik as our special community business partner. This company supports our school financially and by providing volunteers.
