We would like to congratulate Ms. Milena Duboy for being voted as Teacher of the Year by her colleagues! Ms. Duboy is our English Language Learner teacher and has a been a dedicated and loyal teacher for all students. Thank you for ALL you do Ms. Duboy!8th Grade Field Trip:
The 8th grade field trip is finally upon us! Our 8th graders will travel to Atlanta, Georgia Wednesday, March 20th – Friday, March 22nd. If you have questions about items to bring, please contact Ms. King at kingt@gcsnc.com or at 336.316.5833.End of Quarter 3:
Quarter 3 ends Friday, March 22nd. Any outstanding assignments need to be turned in before Friday. We will not accept work through Spring Break.SPRING BREAK:

Ramadan:
Western Guilford Middle School prides itself on being inclusive of diversity and equity for all students. We would like to recognize our students who will begin celebrating Ramadan this week. Ramadan 2024 is expected to begin at sunset Monday, March 11, and conclude at sundown Tuesday, April 9th. If families of students celebrating Ramadan have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to discuss how we can support your child and your home during this time.Interim Assessments:
Tuesday, March 12th, 7th, and 8th grade math students as well as students enrolled in Math 1 will take their 3rd Quarter Interim Assessments.
Thursday, March 14th 6th grade will take their Quarter 3 Math Interim Assessments.Please have students on time so we can begin as close to 9am as possible. Thank you!
School Leadership Meeting:
Due to Spring Break being the last week of March, we will have our March School Leadership Meeting Tuesday, March 12th at 3:50pm in the media center.We look forward to hosting Alderman Elementary 5th graders for a tour of Tiger Nation and an opportunity to hear from our scholars Wednesday, March 13th. These students will have a look into what it means to be a TIGER!
UPCOMING DATES:
The 8th grade field trip to Atlanta is Wednesday, March 20th – Friday, March 22nd. Students not attending the trip are expected to attend school. If students are absent, these will be considered unexcused absences.Quarter 3 ends Friday, March 22nd. We will have report card pick up Tuesday, April 9th from 4:30pm – 7pm. This is a free-flowing event. All families in attendance will receive a chick-fil-a sandwich, chips, and drink.
Friday, April 26th we will have a 6th and 7th grade combined dance from 6pm – 8pm. The cost is $5 in advance and $7 at the door. We will collect money the week of the dance.
8th Grade Formal:
Friday, March 31st is the 8th grade formal. Students have a survey to complete by Tuesday, March12th to determine the theme and colors of this year’s formal. The cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. We will collect money the week of Monday, May 13th. The cost of the dance goes toward covering food and decorations. WOMEN HISTORY MONTH:
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month 2024 will take place from Friday, March 1 - Sunday, March 31, 2024.Beta Club Trip:
Tuesday, March 5th the Beta Club will travel to Duke University for a college tour.District Wide Tornado Drill:
The National Weather Service has designated March 3-9, 2024, as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. In coordination with events for this week, Tornado Drills will be held district wide on March 6, 2024, at 9:30am.NAEP Testing:
Thursday, March 7th, 8th graders will take the NAEP Assessment. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative, continuing evaluation of the condition of education in the United States. It has served as a national yardstick of student achievement since 1969. Through The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP informs the public about what American students know and can do in various subject areas and compares achievement among states, large urban districts, and various student groups.NAEP is a congressionally mandated program administered by the National Center for Education Statistics within the U.S. Department of Education.
PTA Meeting:
We will have a PTA Meeting Thursday, March 7th at 5:30pm to schedule events for the remainder of the year. We will meet face to face and have a zoom meeting available for those attending virtually.ACC Tournament Trip:

Simulacro de Tornado en todo el distrito:
El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional ha designado del 3 al 9 de Marzo de 2024 como la Semana de preparación para Climas Severos. En coordinación con los eventos de esta semana, se llevarán a cabo Simulacros de Tornado en todo el distrito el 6 de Marzo de 2024 a las 9:30 a. m.
Pruebas NAEP:
El Jueves 7 de Marzo, los estudiantes de 8º grado tomarán la evaluación NAEP. La Evaluación Nacional del Progreso Educativo (NAEP) es la evaluación continua y representativa a nivel nacional más grande de la condición de la educación en los Estados Unidos. Ha servido como criterio nacional de rendimiento estudiantil desde 1969. A través de la Boleta de Calificaciones Nacional, la NAEP informa al público sobre lo que los estudiantes estadounidenses saben y pueden hacer en diversas áreas temáticas y compara el rendimiento entre estados, grandes distritos urbanos y varios grupos de estudiantes.

The 8th graders will travel to Western Guilford High School Friday, March 1st for an orientation and tour. Students will leave WGMS at 9:15am and should return by 12:30pm. Our music programs are on the move next week as they travel to Alderman, Guilford, and Jefferson elementary schools to perform for 5th graders to create interest in our music programs. Please return permission forms for students to participate in this trip which will take place Tuesday (Alderman), Wednesday (Guilford), and Thursday (Jefferson) of this week.PROGRESS REPORTS:

Try Outs for Boy’s and Girl’s Track, Baseball and Softball will be held on March 6th, 7th, and 8th immediately after school. Sports Participation Packets must be hand delivered by the student to Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips ONLY by Monday, March 4th by 3:30 PM. *** NO EXCEPTIONS *** Packets can be found with Coach Sexton and Coach Phillips as well as in the front office. Students who have already tried out for a sport this year must see Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips by Monday, March 4th at 3:30 PM to check the status of their physical as well as their eligibility. Eligibility for Spring Sports is based on Semester 1 of this school year. Report Cards:
Report cards were given to students Wednesday, January 31st. If you did not receive a report card from your student, please reach out to the homeroom teacher or front office and we will provide another copy. Report cards should be signed and returned by Monday, February 5th.NWEA Assessments:
Students will take their NWEA Reading Assessment Tuesday, February 6th and their NWEA Math Assessment Thursday, February 8th. The two assessments will determine their growth from the fall assessment. This is an adaptive assessment and will identify what students can do based on their current knowledge. We will use this data to determine small group instruction.ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:
Thursday, February 8th our Girls’, and Boys’ basketball teams will travel to Kernodle for games starting at 4:45pm and our wrestling team will host Kernodle at home for a match at 5pm. Please come out and support your Tiger Athletics.HOMELESS VETERAN SERVICE PROJECT:
This year we will support our Homeless Veterans Project Friday, January 26th – Friday, February 9th.

QUARTER 2 AWARDS PROGRAM:
Friday, February 9th, we will have our Quarter 2 Awards Program. Homeroom teachers are sending invitations home with students who will be highlighted for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, and Leader in Me Awards. Families are invited to this event. The times for each grade level is as follow:
8th Grade – 8:30 to 9:00
7th Grade – 9:30 to 10:00

Boletas de Calificaciones:
Las boletas de calificaciones se entregaron a los estudiantes el Miércoles 31 de Enero. Si no recibió una boleta de calificaciones de su estudiante, comuníquese con el maestro de aula o con la oficina principal y le proporcionaremos otra copia. Las boletas de calificaciones deben firmarse y devolverse antes del Lunes 5 de Febrero.Evaluaciones NWEA:
Los estudiantes tomarán su evaluación de Lectura NWEA el Martes 6 de Febrero y la evaluacion NWEA de matemáticas el Jueves 8 de Febrero. Las dos evaluaciones determinarán su crecimiento a partir de la evaluación de Otoño. Esta es una evaluación adaptativa e identificará lo que los estudiantes pueden hacer en función de su conocimiento actual. Usaremos estos datos para determinar la instrucción en grupos pequeños.ATLETISMO ESTA SEMANA:
El Jueves 8 de Febrero, nuestros equipos de Baloncesto Femenino y Masculino viajarán a Kernodle para los juegos que comenzarán a las 4:45 p. m. y nuestro equipo de Lucha Libre recibirá a Kernodle en casa para un partido a las 5 p. m. Por favor, venga y apoye a Tiger Atleta.PROYECTO DE SERVICIO PARA VETERANOS SIN HOGAR:
Este año apoyaremos nuestro Proyecto de Veteranos sin Hogar desde el Viernes 26 de Enero al Viernes 9 de Febrero.Devolvamos algo a quienes han sacrificado tanto por nuestro país.
Nos gustaría que cada nivel de grado proporcione los siguientes elementos:

I am wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hope you had a wonderful holiday. Welcome to 2024! As I reflect upon the 2023 year, I am excited about the growth opportunities in Tiger Nation! I look forward to what 2024 brings Tiger Nation this year. Let’s finish STRONG!
Monday, January 1st is New Year’s and GCS will be closed for the holiday.
Tuesday, January 2nd is a teacher workday and school is closed for students.
Students will return to school Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024.
Upcoming Events:
- Monday, January 15th – GCS will be closed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
- Wednesday, January 17th – Ms. Shebish and the orchestra/chorus program will host their winter concert at 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Room
- Friday, January 19th – This is the last day for Quarter 2 and the end of the 1st
- Monday, January 22nd is a Teacher Workday and no school for students.

Weekly Announcements 11/26/23

I hope everyone enjoyed their families during the Thanksgiving Holiday. We look forward to receiving our students tomorrow no earlier than 7:45am.
Monthly Leadership Meeting:
Tuesday, November 28th, from 3:50pm – 5:50pm, we will have our monthly school leadership meeting in the media center. All stakeholders are welcome to attend, however, only members of the leadership team can vote.
Native American Heritage Night:
Wednesday, November 29th we will host the district wide Native American Heritage Night at WGMS from 6pm – 8pm. Vendors and food will be available for purchase. Please come out as the district highlights the importance of Native American Heritage in our communities and schools.
PTA Schoolwide Dance:
Friday, December 8th, our PTA will host a schoolwide dance from 6pm – 8pm in the multipurpose room. We will begin selling tickets Friday, December 1st only during arrival in the morning, Tickets in advance are $5 and $7 at the door. This is a cash only event for entry and concessions. If students receive ISS/OSS from November 6th – December 8th, they are only permitted to attend the dance with a parent/guardian as their chaperone. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Reunión Mensual de Liderazgo:
El Martes 28 de Noviembre, de 3:50 p. m. a 5:50 p. m., tendremos nuestra reunión mensual de liderazgo escolar en el centro de medios. Todas las partes interesadas pueden asistir, sin embargo, solo los miembros del equipo de liderazgo pueden votar.
Noche de la Herencia Nativa Americana:
El Miércoles 29 de Noviembre tendremos en todo el distrito la Noche de la Herencia Nativa Americana en WGMS de 6 p.m. a 8 p.m. Habrá vendedores y comida disponible para su compra. Por favor asista mientras el distrito destaca la importancia de la Herencia de los Nativos Americanos en nuestras comunidades y escuelas.
PTA Baile de toda la Escuela:
El Viernes 8 de Diciembre, nuestra PTA organizará el baile para toda la escuela de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m. en el salón de usos múltiples. Comenzaremos a vender boletos el Viernes 1 de Diciembre solo durante la llegada en la mañana. Los boletos cuestan $5 por adelantado y $7 en la puerta. Este es un evento solo en efectivo para las entradas y concesiones. Si los estudiantes reciben suspensiones ISS/OSS del 6 de Noviembre al 8 de Diciembre, solo se les permitirá asistir al baile con un padre o tutor como acompañante. Happy Veteran’s Day to all Veteran’s who served or currently serving in our Armed Forces! We appreciate each of you for giving your lives to protect our country! We salute you today, tomorrow, and forever!Student/Staff Volleyball Game:
Monday, November 13th from 4pm – 6pm, we will have a student vs staff volleyball game. The current girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams will play against each other at 4pm and then the students will play against the staff immediately following the first games.
Admission to the event is 3 non-perishable items to support our Food Drive for the upcoming holidays.Students can stay after school for this event. Students will need to have their permission slip completed to attend this event.

We will have a schoolwide dance Friday, December 8th from 6pm – 8pm. Cost is $5 in advance and $3 at the door. We will sell tickets during arrival after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Students receiving ISS/OSS between Nov. 6th – Dec. 8th will not be eligible to attend the dance without a parent/guardian as a chaperone.This is an important update from the WGMS Athletic Department about upcoming winter sports. Girl's and boys’ basketball tryouts as well as wrestling tryouts will be held Wednesday Nov 15, Thursday Nov 16, and Friday Nov 17 immediately after school until 5:30. Completed WGMS Athletic Packets are due to Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips by Monday Nov 13 at 3:30. NO EXCEPTIONS. Those trying out should be picked up in the bus parking lot no later than 5:30 PM on tryout days.

We had our first PTA meeting Tuesday, October 17th. Please consider joining out PTA for $5. You may submit your payment via Cashapp at $WGMSPTA2022. After you submit your payment, please complete the link below:
October 23rd – October 27th is RED RIBBON SPIRIT WEEK. Red Ribbon week is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States. This year’s theme is BE KIND TO YOUR MIND, LIVE DRUG FREE. Each day this week we will have a different theme.
Monday is “Team up against drugs” and wear your favorite sports team jersey or t-shirt.
Tuesday is “Dress to Impress” – my future is too bright to use drugs. WGMS Picture Day
Wednesday is “Red Ribbon Day” wear red & take the drug-free pledge
Thursday is “Wacky Tacky Day” wear your tacky clothes. Doing drugs is tacky.
Friday is “WGMS is drug free” – wear your WGMS spirit wear.
All clothing must follow the Dress Code Guidelines. Students who are inappropriately dressed will be asked to change.
PICTURE DAY:
October 24th is Fall Picture Day. These will be our Yearbook Pictures. Information was sent home with students with students Tuesday, October 17th regarding picture day.
ATHLETICS:
Monday, October 23rd Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball at home against NE at 4:45pm
Wednesday, October 25th we will travel to Kernodle for a Football game at 5pm
Thursday, October 26th Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball at home against Mendenhall at 4:45pm.
BOOK-O-WEEN:
October 31st is BOOK-O-WEEN and is an opportunity for students and staff to represent a character from their favorite novel/book. Please see the attached documents under student support services to review the expectations for Book-O-Ween.
Additional Updates:
We will begin our Interim Assessments this week. Thursday, October 26th, 7th grade math and 8th grade science will take their quarterly benchmarks in the morning. Please have students arrive on time so we can start at 8:45am. Students will be tested on standards taught during the first quarter.
Students have two and half weeks before the end of the quarter. Please review Parent Portal, PowerSchool, and Canvas to see if your child has missing assignments. Please reach out to your child’s teachers to request extensions and/or opportunity for students to turn in missing assignments for partial grades. Each teacher developed their late work/missing assignment policies. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teachers.
TIGER CART DONATIONS:
Families, please consider donating to the Leaders of the Pack Action Team. The Leaders of the Pack is an action team that works to support student engagement throughout the school year. They are seeking donations to supply the Mobile Tiger Cart with snacks and hygiene products. Students can purchase all items utilizing their Leaderchips which they receive from staff throughout the year. Please see the attached flyer for specific items.
