Hello! My name is Gena Pagano. This is my 9th year teaching PE and my 6th year at Simkins Elementary School. I am married with 2 awesome kids. My son, Carmine, is a graduate of UNC Asheville & my daughter, Kelcey, is a graduate of SEHS. I am also the head cheerleading coach at SEMS. Staying fit and active is VERY important to me!!!
I LOVE our amazing school and all of the opportunities that our students have to succeed. I believe that Physical Education is so important for all aspects of our well-being. My goal is to create an atmosphere where all students can learn, succeed and most of all... have FUN! I feel that exercise is so important for all of us and if we create a love for movement at a young age, it will lead to healthier and more active lifestyles later on down the road.
Students can expect to work hard every time they enter the gym. It is so important to dress for success on PE days by wearing sneakers and comfortable clothing. We will be working on soccer skills, basketball, tennis, dance, gymnastics, bowling, golf, fitness, cooperative games and so much more this year. Our students may come home talking about "Pepper" the penguin and his friends... They are a HUGE part of our PE program and we all LOVE them! Showing good sportsmanship, teamwork, and being kind to others are very important to me.
We will be participating in The Kid's Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart) in the spring. We also have some great opportunities for students to be part of different clubs. Those who love jump rope can try out for the FINtastic Turners jump rope team later this fall. Our FINtastic Turners perform at our Field Day event in the spring. We also have a unified buddy club called the Sharkbites that will be by teacher recommendation. Our Sharkbites meet weekly during the school day and will also be involved in our Special Olympics Winter/Spring Games. Those who LOVE to run will be excited about our PACER club which takes place once per month before school and students must qualify for this based on their PACER assessment. We are excited to have our 2nd year of the GO FAR running club that will begin in the spring. More information to come... :)
Our motto in the gym is to "Work Hard, Dream BIG & make it a...WICKED AWESOME DAY!!!
