    July 20-24 | Paper Palooza

    Grades 1st-3rd

    Art, paper, scissors, GO! Explore the many creative possibilities that a piece of paper can become. From paper mache, to paper marbling and collage, campers will experience the transformative process of an everyday material.

     

    Cost: $100 (includes materials GCS Arts will provide)

     

    August 10-14 | Picasso's Paint Party

    Grades 4th-6th

    This Summer you are invited to party with Picasso and friends! From Cubism to Abstract Expressionism, campers will experience painting in a brand-new way. Pollock, Lawrence, Picasso and more will inspire and instill an appreciation for the world of art through hands-on learning.

     

    Cost: $100 (includes materials GCS Arts will provide)

    HeART & SOUL |  July 5-ongoing 

    Grades 6th-12th

    This program is for creatives and writers of all sorts. HeART & SOUL is a monthly, subscription-based program. Included Monthly will be: 3 writing prompts from our featured Visual artist of the month, an artist talk interview featuring our visual artist, a writing workshop facilitated by myself and various featured poets, screen writers, authors, music artist, etc, one on one coaching sessions and an open mic for all who are registered to participate in.

    Kids Poetry Basketball | July 16 – November 20   Kids Poetry Project Basketball

    Grades 3rd-5th

    Kids learn about poetry, reading, grammar, proper formation of sentences and more while playing basketball games, thus enhancing their literacy skills. The aim of Kids Poetry Basketball is to:

    • Teach young people the many forms of expression that are articulated through poetry, including music, written words, spoken words, art and dance.
    • Help develop kids' public speaking skills
    • Improve youth literacy and reading comprehension
    • Increase student Benchmark scores

    Cost: $75 per session (45 min. each)

    Little Blank Canvas | July 6 - August 21

    Ages 5-13

    Little Blank Canvas is about art, fun, hands-on projects, meeting friends. It's about discovering new solutions, ideas and different ways to express our imagination and creativity in a safe and engaging place, while learning valuable skills.

    Primary pedagogical focus is student engagement and fulfillment. Each lesson plan is crafted to fit each individual student, and catered towards their age, experience level, and musical taste.

    Cost: $30 for a 30 minute lesson, $45 for 45 minutes, and $50 for 60 minutes.

    Kristen Bruce is currently on faculty with the University of North Carolina of the Arts Community Music School and teaches piano and harp lessons for students of all ages. The lessons primarily focus on playing the instrument, and incorporate general music education including music theory, ear training, music history, and performance skills.

    Ages 8+

    Kara Elizabeth is a professional artist, educator and consultant. Inspired by a Holistic and Transformative approach to Art Education, she uses Creative Expression as a tool for teaching Conscious Connections and Peaceful Practices. Kara Elizabeth is guided by the philosophy that creation is a form of meditation and a tool for transformation- making space between the noisy chatter of the mind and connecting us to the deeper and quieter parts of ourselves. She offers a variety of art programs that help relax the mind, nourish the soul and restore the spirit.

Cindy Lain Helms received her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC.  She earned her Masters of Music in Music Education from UNC-Greensboro then earned an Executive Leadership License from Gardner Webb University.  Presently, she teaches music and works in leadership roles at Oak View Elementary in High Point. She also works with SAI as the Program Coordinator for the summer camps. She began her music-teaching career at Wesleyan Christian Academy in the high school department, and then taught elementary and middle school in Kannapolis City Schools. Mrs. Helm’s career includes holding Kindermusik classes for toddlers and preschoolers, as well as extensive work in church music. Her work with adults has included teaching Elementary Music Methods at Rowan Community College and holding workshops for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She has conducted music therapy classes for Rowan County adult day care services. She has adjudicated several local, state and national music competitions and has taught private voice and piano lessons. She was voted “Teacher of the Year” by her co-educators at Oak View in 2010. Her work with the GCS Summer Arts Institute began in 2013 as the SAI Site Coordinator. Mrs. Helms became the SAI Program Coordinator in 2017.

Her passion for the arts is helping others understand the positive power the arts can provide within a community, family and in an individual.

Summer Arts Institute Site Administrator

Lillie Allmond Harris has been a music educator with Guilford County Schools for 8 years and currently teaches general music at Union Hill Elementary School in High Point.  Mrs. Harris received her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Virginia State University in Ettrick, VA. She later attended UNCG to earn her teaching certification in K-12 Music Education. Mrs. Harris has also trained in Level 1 Orff and World Drumming. She is an enthusiast and advocate for public education and The Arts is a financial supporter of the Arts in our local area. She recently held the position of site coordinator for the Summer Arts Institute:  Exploratory Arts and Arts Immersion camps in July 2017.   She holds professional memberships in the following: National Education Association and is an Association Representative for Guilford County Association of Educators.  She also holds memberships with the National Association of Music Education (NAFME). and just completed her 2-year term on the Board as District 7 President for North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA). High Point Arts Mrs. Harris currently serves as President for the High Point Community Concerts Association (HPCCA).
