  • School Health Advisory Council

Schools alone cannot be responsible for the health and well-being of children and youth in their communities.  By utilizing a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), schools can find partners within their communities to identify health problems and concerns, set priorities, and design solutions.

The mission of the Guilford County Schools School Health Advisory Council is to serve as a collective voice and active school/community advisory body for the GCS’s Coordinated School Health Program. The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is an expansion and update of the Coordinated School Health approach.

The WSCC model was designed to focus attention on the student, highlight a school-wide approach, recognize learning, health, and the school as reflecting and being a part of its community. The WSCC model is comprised of the following ten key components:

    • Health Education
    • Physical Education and Physical Activity
    • Nutrition Environment and Services
    • Health Services
    • Social and Emotional Climate
    • Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
    • Physical Environment
    • Employee Wellness
    • Family Engagement
    • Community Involvement

The key objectives of the Guilford County Schools SHAC are:

    • Assisting and advising the GCS in the assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring of the Coordinated School Health Program.
    • Fostering teamwork, collaboration and advocacy among parents, businesses, community leaders and school personnel for communicating and problem solving about health related issues for children and youth.
    • Understanding and advocating for the necessary resources to implement the Coordinated School Health Program.
    • Council meets regularly to review matters of health and make recommendations to the GCS Superintendent and Board of Education.
