  • Guilford County Schools and Mental Health Support:

    Mental Health support starts with Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP) and includes School Counselors, School Social Workers and School Psychologists who work alongside instructional staff to support all students’ mental health and wellness. 

    Mental Health services are available in Guilford County Schools to provide assistance and support for education, consultation and coordination of services within the school and community.  This includes School Based Mental Health (SBMH) services for students in need. SBMH services are offered in teletherapy and face-to-face formats. Contact a Mental Health Teacher Lead for more information at 336-370-8170.

  • Recognizing the Warning Signs:

    There are many different warning signs that can help identify mental health concerns in adults, young adults, older children, and younger children. These symptoms can vary as every person has a different way of showing warning signs of poor mental health. Listed below are some of the concerns reported from Mental Health America (2022):

    Young Children: • Decline in school performance • Poor grades despite strong efforts • Constant worry or anxiety • Repeated refusal to go to school or to take part in normal activities • Hyperactivity or fidgeting • Persistent nightmares • Persistent disobedience or aggression • Frequent temper tantrums or angry outbursts • Depression, sadness or irritability • Loss of interest in things previously liked

    Older Children: •Substance use •Inability to cope with problems and daily activities •Changes in sleeping and/or eating habits •Excessive complaints of physical ailments •Changes in ability to manage responsibilities - at home and/or at school •Defiance of authority, truancy, theft, and/or vandalism •Intense fear •Prolonged negative mood, often accompanied by poor appetite or thoughts of death •Frequent outbursts of anger •Confused thinking (strange thoughts) •Suicidal thoughts

    How do I know if my student is in crisis?

    • It can be hard to know when to be concerned. However, the more you can answer “yes” to a series of questions, the greater the concern.  Is there a change in usual behavior?  Does the behavior occur longer than 2-weeks?  Does this impact relationships and learning?  Is there a risk of safety to self or others?  Are there challenging circumstances or a significant event you are facing? 

     

    How do I get help for my student?

    • Contact the school’s specialized instructional support team.  This team consists of counselors, social workers, and psychologists, who offer support at the school level and/or additional resources outside of school.  If you believe your child is in an immediate crisis, call 988! 

     

    How do I get counseling for my student?

    • Contact the school and they will work with you to determine what level of support, including School Based Mental Health, will best address the needs of your student. 

     

    Does counseling cost?

    • No, there is no fee for School Based Mental Health.

     

    Can substance use affect my mental health?
