WHO IS MS. HIGHTOWER?
Greetings! I am Deidre Dumas Hightower. I will serve as the 8th Grade Counselor for 2022-2023. I am a Greensboro native. I am excited about beginning my 21st year as a Professional School Counselor. Prior to being a counselor, I taught second grade at Summerfield Elementary for five years. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education(K-6) from NC A&T State University and my Master of Science degree in Counselor Education (K-12) also from NC A&T State University(AGGIE PRIDE). I enjoy my work as a Professional School Counselor because I try to make a positive impact on each life I encounter!
The JMS Counseling Program is designed to address students' needs in the areas of career exploration, knowledge of self and others and educational/vocational and career development.

WHAT DO I DO?
My goal is to help each 8th grade student at JMS adjust personally/socially, achieve academically and explore future academic/career interests via the services listed below:

~Friendship Circles Lunch Group/Lunch and Learn
~Bro Talk Lunch Group/Lunch and Learn
~Tigers of Distinction Male Counseling Group
~Crisis Intervention
~Classroom Guidance
~Student Advocacy
~Collaboration with administrators, staff and parents
~Consultation with outside agencies
~Referrals to outside agencies
~Scheduling classes /High School Registration for rising 9th graders/ High School Options
~Suicide Intervention
~504 Coordinator for 8th grade students

Parents/guardians and students will register for 9th grade classes from March 3-12.

1.)Students should select 1 Math/English/Science/Social Studies/PE class, 3 electives and 1 alternate class.

2.)Students will complete the 9th grade registration 2023-2024 gray form

3.)Students will complete at least the 9th grade year on the 4-Year Plan form. *Use the classes selected on the registration form

4.)These completed and signed forms(registration and 4-Year Plan) should be returned to your child's AA/Homeroom teacher by April 17th. 

5.) Ms. Hightower will review online course selections and 4-year plans from March 13-April 28.
