Book Check Out Policies
When is book check out?
Students check out books during their regular library class. Also, students may check out books during open circulation each morning 7:00 until 7:25. Students must check in with their classroom teacher prior to coming to the library and bring their lunch/library card for quick and easy check out.
How many books may be checked out at one time?
In an effort to help students learn to be responsible, we limit the number of books students can check out. However, we do make exceptions for research and other special projects.
- Kindergarten - 1 book, Beginning in November 2 books
- First Grade - 2 books
- Second Grade - 2 Books
- Third Grade - 2 Books
- Fourth Grade - 2 Books
- Fifth Grade - 3 Books
When are books returned to the library?
Students may return books to the library at their regular library class time or during open circulation. Students may keep borrowed library books for two weeks. After that time books are considered overdue by our computer system.
Students will receive an overdue notice in Friday folders biweekly. Our library does not charge fees for overdue books, however please remember other students may be wanting to borrow the same book. Please be respectful and return books on time. Students are not allowed to check out more books if they have an overdue book(s).
Sometimes mistakes do happen, if a student receives an overdue notice and thinks the book was turned in, please let send me a note. I normally ask the student to check in his/her desk, cubby, classroom and at home. I will check the shelves for the book. Also, be sure to check the date on the overdue notice to make sure it is a current notice.
Can books be renewed?
Yes! If a student would like to renew a book, the book must be brought to the library to be scanned in order to renew it for another two weeks or earlier if the student finishes the book.
What if a book is lost or damaged?
If a book is damaged, please send it back to school with a note. Please do not try to repair the book on your own, as we have mending materials in the library to try to fix repairs. If the book can be repaired, it will be returned to the shelf. If the book cannot be repaired, a notice with the price of the book will be sent home with the student. Please send the exact book to replace the damaged book or a check for the cost of the book made out to Stokesdale Elementary School.
If a book is lost, you will receive a notice from the library indicating the cost of the book in order for it to be replaced. Checks should be made out to Stokesdale Elementary School. Due to school policy, if the book is found later, you are not eligible for a refund. I suggest looking for the book in all those special places, under the bed, in the closet, on bookshelves at home, etc., before paying for the book. Of course, a brand new exact book may be given in place of the lost book instead of payment. For example, if the lost book is a hardback the book replacement must be hardback.
