There’s no denying that the rainbow flag is one of the most recognizable symbols of the LGBTQ+ community. But what are the meanings of each of its colors?

Gilbert Baker created the original rainbow flag in 1978.  It featured eight colors, each with its own meaning. Red symbolizes life, orange represents healing, pink portrays sexuality, yellow stands for sunlight, green depicts nature, turquoise represents creativity, indigo displays harmony, and violet illustrates spirit.  The colors were later reduced to six because hot pink was removed and turquoise and indigo were blended into royal blue.

The Western Guilford Middle School Counseling Department agrees…

In the ability of all students to be successful regardless of background, limitations, capabilities, and or setbacks,

That the role of a school counselor is to be an advocate for the needs of all students based on their academic and/or developmental needs.

As a school counselor, we will be a voice for those students who need support, resources, and assistance in and out of the classroom.

All team members, including administrators, school counselors, teachers, staff, community leaders, and family members must actively be involved in the planning, managing, delivery, and evaluation of program activities designed to meet the needs of our students.

Valid data must be analyzed on an on-going basis to properly assist with making informed program decisions that will best meet the needs of all students.

All decisions must be driven by the ASCA ethical standards which all school counselors use as a daily guide in their profession.

    VISION STATEMENT

Our Comprehensive School Counseling Program promotes a community that is safe and fosters growth in our students by supporting structures and encouraging academic excellence, along with the establishment of healthy relationships with the goal of improving student outcomes.

    MISSION STATEMENT

To create a comprehensive program that allows for involvement of all stakeholders to help our students develop appropriate skills to meet their full academic, personal, and social potential.  Thereby producing responsible and productive citizenship in the 21st century.
