What is Battle of the Books (BOB)?

Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition sponsored by the NC School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) and held locally by the GCS Department of Library Media Services.

Battle of the Books is open to all students grade 4 and 5.  Students across the state read books from a list selected by NCSLMA.  In February, GCS holds a district wide competition where students answer specific, detailed questions about the books.  Team compete to make it to finals in March.

How do I get to participate in BOB?

We begin as a club and participating students will read as many books as possible from the list of 15 books and will take tests, journal, participate, and attend meetings through November.  Points will be awarded at the BOB Club meetings.  The 12 students with the most points will be on our BOB Team.

    When are the meetings?

Meetings will be after school one day a week until 3:45 pm.  The day of the meetings and interest forms will be distributed during the first week of school.

How do I increase my chances of being on the BOB team?

The best way to prepare for the competition is to begin reading the 15 books over the summer and then to re-read the books for the club meetings.  The questions for the competition are very detailed and specific.  Many books are available through our eBooks at destinydiscover.com and through the public libraries.

Summer:  Begin reading from the BOB list.

August:  Battle of the Books Club meetings will begin.

November:  Selection of 12 person final team.
