• Welcome Northern Nighthawks!!!

My name is Mrs. Miller and I am the K-5 school counselor at Northern Elementary.  I have been a counselor for 23 years and have worked at Northern Elementary since we first opened.  My goal as a school counselor is to help each child experience a successful school year.

What does a school counselor do?

Classroom Guidance - I visit each class as part of their weekly specials rotation.  During our time together, we focus on learning good work habits, positive character traits, and getting along with each other.  Activities include stories, games, puppets, drawing, acting, singing and generally having a great time while learning about being our best selves!

Individual Counseling - As a licensed school counselor, I am able to provide brief solution-focused counseling services for students who may be experiencing concerns that impact their learning such as anxiety, problems with friendships, behavior, change in family situation, illness or death of a loved one, etc. If long-term counseling is more appropriate due to the nature or severity of a concern, I am glad to assist in making a referral for outside therapists or agencies.

Small Group Counseling - Being a part of a small group of children who share similar concerns provides students an opportunity to practice new skills in a more comfortable, supportive setting.  Small groups will meet during the school day and require parent permission.  Possible group topics are anger management, friendship/social skills, separation/divorce, grief, and self-esteem.

I also serve in other areas such as chair of our Intervention Support Team (IST) and 504-Coordinator.  I am available to help match families with resources in the community such as food assistance.

I am happy to meet with you throughout the year about concerns that you may have for your child.  Please feel free to call me or send an email to set up a time to meet or talk by phone.  My schedule changes daily, so setting up an appointment will allow us to have uninterrupted time to work together.
