  • February 20, 2024 – The Guilford County Board of Education’s Policy Committee reported that the following policy revisions are available for public input from February 20 to March 21, 2024.

The proposed revision to Policy 3104 Magnet or Option Schools and Programs is recommended to change the title to “Choice Schools and Programs” to reflect the district’s current language. The policy has been revised to move the guiding principles to the top and to reflect accurately the district's current types of choice schools and programs.

The proposed revision to Policy 4150 School Assignment is recommended to move the guiding principles to the beginning of the policy and to clarify language regarding school assignments and reassignments. The revision also reflects a change to the appeals process for denials of reassignment requests to shift hearings from a Board panel to a hearing officer. The Board retains the final review and approval, consistent with state law. This process change will reduce waiting times for families and ensure consistency across appeal recommendations.

The proposed revision to Policy 6400 Equal Opportunity Contracting, which was last updated in 1994, reflects the Board's current list of protected classes and clarifies that the purpose of this policy is to encourage the participation of vendors in bids and application processes.

Policy 9000 Planning for Facility Needs is a proposed new policy recommended to reflect the Board's vision for an ongoing facility planning process that is driven by data and community needs. The recommended policy documents the current process and the Board's intention to collaborate with the community and the Board of County Commissioners on planning and funding proposals.

Members of the public may submit feedback on the policy revisions for 30 days by emailing, or by mailing their comments to ATTN: Policy Comments, Office of the Superintendent, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, NC 27401. The Board of Education will consider these policies at its April meeting.
