My name is Ms. Ruby Ellen Farr. Welcome to my website! I teach third grade math at McNair Elementary. I am new to REM but not new to education or teaching. I moved to Greensboro in July 2018 from Greenville, NC where I taught second grade all subjects for ten years. Before that I was a third grade Instructional Assistant in Wayne County, NC for five years.
I graduated from ECU in December 2007 with a BS in Elementary Education- Magna Cum Laude
I have an AS in Child Development and an AA in Early Childhood Education from Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, FL. Both of those degrees are with high honors.
I also have a military background. I am an honorably discharged active duty USAF veteran. I served four years active duty in Security Forces. I was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, FL from January 1991- September 1994. I also served inactive reserves there for 2 years after that. My discharged rank is Sergeant. I volunteered a lot of my off duty time there as a mentor at the base elementary school. This was where I first had a desire to teach elementary school.
I have an amazing 24 year-old daughter, Rachael, who lives in Greenville, NC with her fantastic fiance, Carlos and my silly grand dog, Bella (a black lab-dalmatian mix)
I have a fabulous boyfriend, Bob.
I am a fun and funny teacher but also serious about the task of teaching math. I love math and know that being an expert mathematician can unlock so many doors for my third graders. I teach a lot of shortcuts and fluency strategies for success. We sing a lot of learning songs and speak a lot of math chants. I show multiple ways to arrive at a solution to math problems. I am an enthusiastic supporter and encourager for students that need extra support to have their "light bulb" moments and a cheer leader when students do understand new math concepts. I know every student thinks and learns differently. I celebrate this whole-heartedly.
In my spare time I enjoy reading and learning new concepts and ideas because I will always be a life-long learner. I love gardening, fitness walking, working out at the YMCA, drawing, spending time with friends and loved ones, and meditating.
