    Week of 02.22.21

    1. New Schedules:

FACE-TO-FACE STUDENTS FINDING THEIR FACE-TO-FACE SCHEDULES:   You don’t need to do anything ahead of time to find your new face-to-face schedule.  All face-to-face learners will receive their schedule (a new “order of classes”) during their first class of the day at Mendenhall.  Each teacher throughout the day will spend a little time during class reviewing the changes in the schedule/new order of classes that students will experience.

All 6th grade students received individualized schedule information from their teachers through Canvas Messaging.

All 7th and 8th grade students will receive schedule information the week prior to students being in the building.

REMOTE-ONLY STUDENTS FINDING THEIR REMOTE SCHEDULES:

All 6th grade students have received individualized schedule information from their teachers through Canvas Messaging.  7th and 8th grade will receive all schedule information the week prior to Face-to-Face students returning to the building so that all students in the same grade start the new schedule at the same time.

UPDATE:  TRANSITIONS AT SCHOOL DURING FACE-TO-FACE LEARNING:

The transition plan for students remains the same as previously communicated – here are details that will help you envision the school day:

Core Classes:  Students will still have one transition each day.  Teachers will rotate for each Core class instead of students changing classes.  For Core classes, students will report to their Homeroom.  This is noted in both PowerSchool and on the schedule information received by their teacher in Canvas Messaging the week before their grade level starts face-to-face learning (look at the section labeled “Report To Room Number”).  The class grouping for Homeroom is usually a student’s math class.

Encore Classes:  Students will transition to one Encore class daily.  This information comes from their teacher through Canvas Messaging the week before their grade level starts face-to-face learning.

Lunch Time:  Students will eat lunch in the same room as their Homeroom grouping noted above. Please help us by sending lunch with your child if they bring their lunch, instead of dropping off lunch daily.  If your child forgets lunch, please call the school at 336.545.2000 ahead of time to help us follow COVID19 protocols.

    1. Update: School Visits from Parents and Visitors:   Parents, please make an appointment by calling 336.545.2000 if you need to come into the building due to COVID19 protocols.  Please help us by sending lunch with your child if they bring their lunch, instead of dropping off lunch daily.  If your child forgets lunch, please follow the above protocol by calling the school.

    Messages for Face-to-Face Learners:

Welcome back!   We look forward to seeing you!  😊

    1. Returning to school but forgot to complete the Bus Request Form?   If you need bus transportation but forgot to fill out the form previously, please fill out the Bus/Transportation Preference Form (click link here or fill out form on the GCS Transportation website).

    1. Update: How do I access my child’s bus information?   Log onto PowerSchool or have your child pull up their PowerSchool account and click on the Transportation button on the left. In the event of any questions or errors, please contact the GCS Transportation Dept. at 336.370.8920 or email gcs-transportation@gcsnc.com.

GCS loaded all bus information in POWERSCHOOL to include:

-Morning Bus Number & Afternoon Bus Number (sometimes different numbers)

-Times for Pick Up/Drop Off (be at the bus stop 10 minutes early in the morning)

-Street Address of the Bus Stop

    1. Update: Arrival, Dismissal, and Car Rider Numbers:

Mendenhall’s arrival and dismissal times have changed.

Although our tardy bell will now be 8:55am, cars & buses may begin off-loading at 8:35am

    Dismissal begins at 3:25pm.

If your child is a car rider, please be patient as students, parents, and staff learn new routines. 😊

CAR RIDER NUMBER:   This is usually the last 4 digits of student ID/lunch #.  You will be provided 2 cards with your child’s number to place in the dashboards of two different cars.

    1. Attestation and Temperature Checks:Temperatures of students will be taken upon arrival at school.  If a student if running a fever upon arrival, they will not enter classroom spaces and CDC Guidelines will be followed.  Middle school students will complete their electronic Attestation Form daily.  If possible, we encourage students to complete the form through the CrisisGo APP or daily EMAIL in order to show the green safety screen to school personnel.  Hard copies will be available for those without a phone.

*Please see below for all CrisisGo APP and login information.

    1. Bookbags & Supplies:Students will not have access to lockers and will carry bookbags to class so please allow your child to pack lightly with access to personal pens, pencils, folder(s), notebooks, and full water bottle each day.  Please avoid too many heavy, bulky binders.

    1. Come to School Daily with Filled Water Bottle:Please allow your child to come to school with a FULL water bottle since water fountains are closed and this will help minimize wait time and student contact at the water cooler.  No other beverages except at lunch time, please.

    1. Cell Phones:Cell phones are normally kept in student bookbags which are then stored in lockers.  Cell phones will continue to be stored in student bookbags only and hung on the back of a student’s chair.

    1. Computers at School:Student computers are expected to arrive soon and we are excited about this!  We will let you know as soon as they are here so we can begin the checkout process for all students.  At this point, teachers are planning lessons for face-to-face learners that do not require computers while at school.

    1. Universal Breakfast for All Students:Students will pick up a free breakfast as they enter classrooms daily. Additional Meals:  Students may pick up additional free meals as they exit the building daily.

Accessing Schedules on PowerSchool, Courses on Canvas, & Times of Classes

On Friday, Aug. 21, the MMS Advisory Course in Canvas walked students through the process of finding and following their schedule in PowerSchool.  Detailed log in info is on the last page of this document but students find their schedules by clicking on PowerStudent instead of Canvas when logging into my.NCEdCloud.org.  All courses will be present on Canvas when students log in on Monday, Aug. 24.  Please refer to your child’s schedule and plan to have them logged in at the beginning of each class period for maximum engagement Weeks 4-9.  Class Schedules are posted in each student’s PowerSchool but TIMES students attend classes are outlined in the “Daily Class Period Schedules,” seen on this document & our website under both Connect Ed & Remote Learning sections.

    Meet Each Teacher

On Monday, Aug. 24, teachers will hold Orientations for each class, sharing expectations for remote learning, exploring canvas, and explaining how to access both daily lessons and recorded lessons, in the event of an absence.  Due to county-wide security and privacy concerns expressed with some “live platforms,” teachers will be “live on computer” at Orientations but participants won’t see one another.  Some schools are still using these platforms but we, along with GCS, are exploring more safe & reliable “live interactions” and plan to have these safeguards in place when beginning daily ‘live interactions’ in each class period on Week 4, Sept. 8.

    Core & Encore Canvas Instruction (Weeks 2 & 3)

During Weeks 2-3 (Aug. 24-Sep. 4), students will attend class Orientations and work in Core & Encore instructional Canvas courses.  Just like Week 1, there are assignments to complete even though most classes will contain pre-recorded content according to the GCS timeline.  Although we are gradually increasing expectations, assignments are tied to each Core & Encore class.  Weeks 2-3 will help provide stability and consistency so students may acclimate to schedules and become accustomed to logging in to each course daily.

Core & Encore Canvas Instruction (Weeks 4-9)

During Weeks 4-9, teachers will be live in each course every day, providing in-class support along with office hours at other parts of the day.  Office hours for teachers are posted in the Weeks 4-9 Student Schedule.  Teachers may pre-record parts of their daily lessons in order to avoid potential technology problems and potential background interferences.  However, during Weeks 4-9, the teacher will be ‘live’ in each period, each day, on their computer, engaging with and providing support for students during class time.

    Core Schedule for Weeks 2-9

Core Schedule times, as shown below, will begin Monday, Aug. 24, and will remain consistent while students are learning from home.

Encore Schedule for Weeks 2-3 & Weeks 4-9

Encore Schedule TIMES of classes will be consistent, but DAYS will be different from Weeks 2-3 & Weeks 4-9.  Please see info below.

Important:  While students are attending virtual classes, they will have a simpler Encore schedule to follow and will not switch back and forth each day between A/B classes.   Students will find their specific Encore CLASSES on their schedule in PowerSchool, then find the TIMES of classes on the “Daily Class Period Schedules” below, and the DAYS they will meet for A/B day classes are explained in info below.  If students accidentally attend the wrong class, Encore teachers will help students understand which one they should attend.
