Linkage Institutions in American Democracy
-
The Founders formed a democratic republic based on the idea of popular sovereignty or the power of the people to govern. Within our democratic republic five institutions have formed in order connect American government to the people, known as linkage institutions. These institutions allow us as citizens to be informed of government actions, check potential abuse of power, and allow for us to influence public policy decisions. Currently there are five major linkage institutions: voting, elections, political parties, mass media and interest groups.
