Out of the Garden

  • Out of the Garden Project is a nonprofit organization that is taking on the issue of chronic hunger.  One of their programs is Operation Backpack.

Out of the Garden Project partners with Guilford County schools and provides 1,900 students and their families with food to take home for the weekend every Friday. The goal of Operation Backpack is to ensure children are fed and ready to learn by Monday. These meal bags contain between 6-8 lbs of non-perishable food; enough food items for two meals for a family of four.  The majority of the non-perishable food used in this program comes from donations from generous partners.  Volunteers are always needed to help sort donated food as well as pack Operation Backpack meal bags....

And that's where we come in!

Sternberger's World Changers will be collecting food donations, sorting, and packing meal bags for Operation Backpack.  Our food drive will begin on January 4th and run through January 31st.  On February 2nd, we will have our HOOT Day of Kindness when students will sort and pack the meal bags during their specials' time.

The specialists and Sternberger's Service Learning Committee look forward to partnering with our Sternberger students and families in order to meet our goal of supplying Out of the Garden with three weeks' worth of weekend meal bags!
