How It Works

  • Enroll In Classes

Students must enroll in at least two classes per semester (four per year) at high schools with a block schedule or take three classes per year at high schools with traditional schedules and make satisfactory progress throughout the semester. Block or traditional schedules are determined by your assigned high school. To locate your assigned school, please click here.

    Build a Schedule

Parents will collaborate with School Counseling Services staff and administration to develop the student’s schedule upon enrollment to ensure that the student meets the expected coursework requirements. In alignment with the school’s master schedule, homeschool families can choose the classes that best fit their needs and schedule. Note that there may be limited seats available for high-demand classes; others may require prerequisite courses.

After schedules have been finalized, students will follow the GCS add/drop guidelines. Additional information will be gathered regarding activities the students will participate in and any special needs.

Homeschool students can complete their schedule by taking classes online through a GCS platform or at Guilford Technical Community College through the Career and College Promise program (tuition is included, but transportation and books are not included.)

    Participate in Co-Curriculars

Students will have access to extra and co-curricular activities, athletics, JROTC, learning hubs, and mental health services at their assigned high school.

    Earn Your Diploma

Students interested in receiving a GCS diploma must become a full-time student and meet all the GCS graduation requirements.

Students must participate in national, state and district assessments when applicable.

    For Interscholastic Athletics

The High School Athletic Director will determine eligibility based on the following criteria:

    • The Homeschool must be approved by the state.

    • The student must have been enrolled in the homeschool for the previous 365 days.

    • The student must be dually enrolled and attend classes for at least ½ of the school day (Two class periods for block schools, three classes for traditional schools) at the assigned public school.

    • The student must attend at least one class in person at the assigned school.

    • The student must pass all classes taken with the public school.

    • The student must notify the school administration at least 10 days prior to the start of the athletic season.

    • The student must remain continuously enrolled. If the homeschool student withdraws from the public high school, the 365-day clock starts over.
