Leaking Boiler Room at Washington Elementary

A firefight. That’s how long-time Guilford County Schools (GCS) operations employees describe the work needed to repair the district’s aging facilities.

Currently, GCS is comprised of 120 schools and more than 300 facilities totaling over 12 million square feet. Many of the buildings were built before Neil Armstrong’s 1969 moon landing. Just like Armstrong, GCS has taken steps forward to address infrastructure challenges, but funding limitations and deferred maintenance have often caused us to lose ground. Why? The short and fast answer is money. But GCS leaders say it will take a little more than cash to get facilities where they need to be.

Guilford County Schools (GCS) is ushering in a new era of education with the opening of four new state-of-the-art facilities.

In the 2024-2025 school year, four new schools welcomed students and staff through their doors: Claxton Elementary, Peck K-8 Expeditionary Learning, Brooks Global Studies and Foust Elementary schools.

Each building has brought new life into its community. Students, staff and parents alike are all excited about the possibilities for their children. “There is no other elementary school that I would want for my 2nd grade daughter and young son,” Tiffany Estes said.

Board of Education

The Guilford County Board of Education is made up of nine members who are elected by citizens in partisan elections every four years. The terms are staggered to ensure continuity of service. Members establish policies that govern our school system, including its curriculum, facilities, financial resources and personnel. The board evaluates the district's achievement and monitors its progress, making sure that goals are met.

Every seat was up for election in 2016 under Senate Bill 317 passed in 2013. The bill redrew the Guilford County Board of Education district lines to match with the Board of County Commissioner districts, reducing the number of school board members from 11 to nine. The redistricting reduced the number of districts from nine to eight, and eliminated one of two at-large seats.

The at-large seat and even numbered seats (Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8) will serve two-year terms and go up for re-election in 2018. The odd numbered seats (Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7) will serve for four years to stagger elections. After the first term, the at-large and even number seats will serve four-year terms.

The bill also changed Guilford County Board of Education elections from non-partisan to partisan races, meaning candidates must declare a political party to be in a primary. Otherwise they run unaffiliated in the general election.Persons wanting to publicly address the Board of Education at its monthly meeting may register to do so by emailing boardclerk@gcsnc.com the day befo the meeting starting at 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. the day of the meeting.
