Support for Career and Postsecondary Planning

Increase state-funded counselor allocations to match nationally recommended ratios for school counselors.

To support college, career and whole-child readiness, GCS needs:

Increase school counselor allocations to one school counselor per 250 students to match recommended ratios for school counselors by the American School Counselor Association. The GCS actual ratio is one school counselor per 299 students.

Why this matters:

School counselors help students reach their full potential and graduate college and career ready by addressing their academic, career, and social-emotional needs. They provide individual planning, classroom guidance, small group support, and responsive services when challenges arise. With the Guilford Guarantee promising every graduate college credits, industry certifications, or career experiences, students need personalized guidance to navigate these opportunities. When counselors serve 299 students instead of the recommended 250, there aren't enough hours to provide every student the individual attention they deserve.

The recommended ratio ensures all students get the timely support they need to plan their future, access dual enrollment, connect with career experiences, and receive social-emotional support essential to their success.
