Safe, Supportive Learning Environments

To support student safety, GCS needs:

$3.5 million to sustain critical safety infrastructure, including $2 million to continue the lease for security scanners in all middle and high schools, $660,000 for camera system licenses, $340,000 for radio communication fees, $275,000 for bi-directional amplifiers that ensure first responder radio reception throughout our buildings, and $140,000 for the required visitor management system. These investments represent the baseline operational costs necessary to maintain safe and secure learning environments across the district. 

Why this matters:

The security infrastructure GCS has built over recent years creates layered protection:

• scanners screen everyone entering middle and high schools,
• cameras monitor buildings,
• visitor management systems control access, and
• communication technology ensures staff can reach first responders instantly and that those responders can communicate throughout buildings during emergencies.

Each component serves a specific purpose, and together they form a comprehensive safety system that protects our 67,000+ students and thousands of staff members daily. 

Maintaining this infrastructure isn't a one-time expense. It requires ongoing investment in equipment leases, software licenses, and communication fees. Without these funds, critical systems could go offline, creating dangerous gaps in our security coverage. These investments aren't enhancements or upgrades; they're the operational costs necessary to sustain the baseline level of school safety that our community expects and our students deserve. 

Safe schools are the foundation for learning. Students can't focus on academics if they don't feel secure, and teachers can't teach effectively in environments where safety is uncertain.
