Public Input Requests

Periodically, the Board of Education will post policy updates and naming nominations for public comment to receive input from members of the community. Items that are currently open for comment are posted on this page with instructions on how to provide your feedback. The Board of Education values your opinion and appreciates your feedback on these items.

Call for Name Nominations:

Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School

May 1, 2025 – In accordance with policy 9300 Naming or Renaming of Facilities, the Guilford County Board of Education Facilities Naming Committee is requesting public input on the name of the new Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School for a 30-day period.

Attendance Boundary Changes

May 13, 2025 – At its regular meeting, the Board of Education received information about proposed boundary changes that would affect several schools in 2026-27 and 2027-28. The proposed changes are:

In 2026-27:

  • Madison Elementary is proposed to close. The boundaries of Reedy Fork Elementary, Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary, and Brightwood Elementary are impacted. 
  • Vandalia Elementary and Washington Elementary are proposed to close. The boundaries of Bessemer Elementary, Bluford Elementary, Falkener Elementary, Frazier Elementary, Gillespie Park Elementary, Pleasant Garden Elementary, and Simkins Elementary are impacted.

In 2027-28:

  • Southern Elementary is proposed to close. The boundaries of Allen Jay Elementary and Sumner Elementary are impacted.

The board will receive public comments and feedback on this proposal until June 10. The board will discuss the proposed boundaries further and may vote after a public hearing at the June 10 Board of Education meeting.

Policy Committee Report

May 13, 2025 – The Guilford County Board of Education Policy Committee voted to send the following policies out for a 30-day public input period. 

 Proposed revisions to Policy 4201/7271 Injury and Loss Prevention (new title: Occupational Safety and Health Plan) are recommended by legal counsel to make it clear that GCS has a plan to comply with occupational safety and health requirements.  

Policy 4202/5029/7272 Service Animals in Schools has updates, which if approved, would reflect a legal ruling regarding non-service animals used by individuals with disabilities.  

A proposed update to Policy 5026/7250 Tobacco - Smoke Free Workplace (New title: Smoking and Tobacco Products Prohibited) reflects requirements of state law related to signage and exceptions for educational purposes.  

If approved, Policy 7120 Employee Health Certificates and 7260 Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control would be repealed and their content would be absorbed into the proposed revisions to Policy 7262 Communicable Diseases – Employee Safety. Policy 7262 has been refreshed to reflect current guidance related to safety, health and reporting.
