What is GCS Flex?

In Guilford County Schools, we believe in the power of choice. We are pleased to invite homeschool high school students and their families to enroll in GCS Flex.

GCS Flex is a new, free program that allows homeschool high school students to access rigorous academic courses from qualified and caring teachers and staff at their assigned high school.

At the same time, students can also earn career certifications on a broad range of topics, including cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, aviation, pharmacy and more.

While enrolled in the GCS Flex program, homeschool students can also take advantage of courses online.

Students will have access to extra and co-curricular activities, athletics, JROTC, learning hubs and mental health services at their assigned high school.

How Does GCS Flex Work?

Enroll in Classes

Build a Schedule

Parents will collaborate with School Counseling Services staff and administration to develop the student’s schedule upon enrollment to ensure that the student meets the expected coursework requirements. In alignment with the school’s master schedule, homeschool families can choose the classes that best fit their needs and schedule. Note that there may be limited seats available for high-demand classes; others may require prerequisite courses.

After schedules have been finalized, students will follow the GCS add/drop guidelines. Additional information will be gathered regarding activities the students will participate in and any special needs.

Participate in Co-Curriculars

For Interscholastic Athletics

The High School Athletic Director will determine eligibility based on the following criteria:

The Homeschool must be approved by the state.
The student must have been enrolled in the homeschool for the previous 365 days.
The student must be dually enrolled and attend classes for at least ½ of the school day (Two class periods for block schools, three classes for traditional schools) at the assigned public school.
The student must attend at least one class in person at the assigned school.
The student must pass all classes taken with the public school.
The student must notify the school administration at least 10 days prior to the start of the athletic season.
The student must remain continuously enrolled. If the homeschool student withdraws from the public high school, the 365-day clock starts over.
