My name is Ms. Woolstrum. I am the Reading Specialist at Morehead Elementary School. I work with small groups of students to help them with decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I teach students in grades kindergarten through fifth. I obtained my Masters in Reading from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I have been working as a Reading Specialist for thirteen years. I have also taught third and first grade. Teaching literacy is my passion! When I am not teaching you can find me reading, gardening, running, and playing outside with my son.
At Morehead Elementary, we are using the Wilson Fundations program to help students with reading intervention. (Check out my “Helpful Resources” links). Wilson Fundations provides all students with a systematic program in the foundational skills for phonemic awareness, phonics-word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, and spelling. It is a wonderful program that will help make your child a better reader. We also integrate decodable books to help reinforce the skills that are taught.
Students who need to further their comprehension and vocabulary skills will be using the Leveled Literacy Intervention program by Fountas and Pinnell. This group of students will also have time for word work.
I believe that students need to pick out books that interest and motivate them as readers as well as having books to help them with decoding skills.
I hope you will feel welcomed at our school and know that you matter.
