A Word About Face Coverings
This is a follow-up to the information in the executive order and from the NCHSAA related to masks effective as of 5:00 PM today.
While actively participating in outdoor contests or practices, athletes and game officials will not be required to wear a mask. All others, including spectators and coaches, are expected to continue wearing the masks while attending events at GCS schools.
From NCHSAA on April 29, 2021
“Beginning Friday at 5:00 pm, the NCHSAA will follow the lead of Governor Cooper’s mandate in removing the regulation requiring athletes to wear face coverings during outdoor practice and/or competition. Masks will now be optional for outdoor sport participants, including officials, who actively participate in the competition. All athletes, coaches, spectators, and officials not actively participating in aerobic activity and cannot socially distance themselves are encouraged to wear face coverings while in the venue. As always, our LEA’s may be more restrictive than this policy, but not less. You are encouraged to read the Governors Executive Order relative to spectators at outdoor sporting events.
We ask our athletes and coaches to remain vigilant in wearing face coverings in group settings, maintaining six feet of distance between yourself and others not in your household, and washing your hands regularly. If we continue to do this, together, we can defeat COVID-19.”
