    6th Grade Science

    2017-2018

    Mr. Mills’ Science Syllabus

    Welcome to 6th Grade Science! We are going to have a wonderful year, exploring, investigating and digging deeper into topics covered in earlier years. I am very excited about this year!

    What will my child learn this year?

    This year we will be learning how rocks are made, the effect of plate tectonics on the Earth, how energy is transferred, and ecosystems. We will complete hands on experiments, reading science literature, use interactive notebooks, creating projects and working on our own personal computers.  These Science essentials will help each student develop a thorough understanding of the concepts covered. Along with these components students will also have their assignments, quizzes, and tests.

    Will my child have lab assignments?

    Yes. Since we will be doing lab investigation throughout the year, safety is a top priority. All rules must be followed at all times. It is expected that students behave and conduct themselves accordingly. Before each experiment, lab safety rules will be identified and discussed with students. Classroom rules will also be reiterated during this time.

    How will my child be graded this year?

    Students will be graded on a point system. Test, quizzes, projects, and other assessments (i.e. worksheets, notebook checks, computer assignments) will be worth a specific amount of points which will be conveyed to students on the assignment or in the form of a rubric.

    Your child will receive a progress report 4.5 weeks and a report card every 9 weeks. Students must turn in class assignments and homework promptly on the day it is due. No Late Work is accepted for credit, without a reasonable written excuse from a parent or guardian. Late work is due at the end of the week on Friday.

    Grading Scale

    A=90-100    B=80-89    C=70-79    D=60-69    F= 59 and lower

    How do I contact my child’s teacher?

    I’ll be happy to address concerns or questions throughout the year, Feel free to contact me by phone 336 370-3471 or email millsj@gcsnc.com
