Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Suzanne Harmon

Welcome to Mrs. Harmon's Fantastic First Grade Class! My name is Suzanne Harmon, and I am a First Grade Teacher at Bessemer Elementary School.  I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and moved to North Carolina to attend college.  I am a graduate of both High Point University, and UNC-Greensboro.  I have been a teacher at Bessemer Elementary for the last 7 years.  During my time at Bessemer, I have taught First Grade and a First and Second Grade combination class. My goal is for my students to be respectful and responsible students who grow up to be lifelong learners.  All my students are challenged to reach their potential through whole group learning, guided practice, and independent practice, as well as cooperative learning.

This year we are continuing to implement a balanced literacy program through CKLA skills, Listening and Learning, speaking and listening and writing.  There is also a block of time dedicated to teaching guided reading on each students instructional level. These skill groups meet the needs of all learners.

In Eureka math, we teach the first grade math standards through hands on problem solving, with the use of manipulatives and activities to make the problem solving as concrete as possible.
