Welcome to Mrs. Kouba's Homepage!
My name is Maria Valeria Rivas de Kouba. I have been in education for 29 years. I currently serve as the curriculum facilitator at Newcomers School. Our school serves immigrants and refugees in their first year in US schools. As a curriculum facilitator, I have the honor to collaborate with several teams of teachers to design and implement curriculum, instructional units, and interventions to accelerate the language acquisition of ELLs in grades 3-12. In addition, as a team, we focus on implementing appropriate assessment tools to monitor the academic progress of ELLs.
I am originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Prior to Newcomers School, I worked for 12 years in Argentina as an EL teacher and a curriculum coordinator for primary years. I came to US in the year 2000. Since then, I have worked for Guilford County Schools. First, I taught as a Spanish teacher at Southwest Guilford Middle School. After that, I taught as an EL teacher at Southwest Guilford Middle and High for several years. I was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2008 at SWGM. I transitioned to Newcomers in the year 2013.
My special interests include spending time with family - my husband and two daughters - and traveling. I have had the opportunity to visit several countries and US states. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and growing in cultural competence. I have a special interest in creating opportunities for students to develop their leadership. Hence, at Newcomers School I am the advisor of the HS Student Leaders Club and the HS Student Voice & News Club.
