What is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition sponsored by The North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) and held locally by Guilford County Schools Department of Library Media Services.
Students across the state read books from a list selected by NCSLMA. In March, Guilford County Schools holds a district-wide competition where students answer specific, detailed questions about the books.
Battle of the Books is open to all students in grades 4 and 5.
Details and regulations are available at ncslma.org/ebob.
How do I get to participate in BOB?
Start reading books from the list now! In the fall, the BOB reading club will meet a few times to discuss and distribute books. These meetings are open to all interested 4th and 5th grade students. In December, interested students will take a test on all 15 books. The top 12 scoring students will be invited to participate on the 2020 Battle of the Books Team, pending parent and teacher approval.
When are meetings?
Most meetings will take place during the school day once or twice a week. The 12-member final team may have a few optional after-school practices.
How do I increase my chances of being on the BOB team?
The questions at the EBOB competition are very detailed and specific. The best way to prepare for the competition is to read all 15 books over the summer and then to re-read the books. Many of the books are available on our e-book shelf at gofollett.com.
