Welcome to Mrs. Hendren's Math Class! I am excited to join the fabulous KMS team this year. I've spent the past 7 years teaching 7th grade math at Jamestown Middle. The only reason I moved was to be closer to home and my family.
A little about me: I am originally from New York but moved to the Greensboro area when I was four. So I'm really a southerner at heart. This past year, I became a mother to my beautiful daughter Ava! Me, my husband, and our golden retriever Sadie are so in love with our new addition. This is my 8th year teaching 7th grade math. I absolutely LOVE what I do and I am definitely a math nerd :)
This year, Guilford County has purchased a new math program called Open Up. Students and math teachers across the county will be pushed to dig deeper into the math. The program encourages inquiry and problem based learning where students must justify their answers. Students will be given a workbook to take home with worked out activity problems. We will also use an interactive notebook to house additional notes. Please refer to both of these tools if your child struggles with their homework.
Open Up has broken the 5 common core standards into 8 units:
1. Scale Drawings
2. Intro to Proportional Relationships
3. Measuring Circles
4. Proportional Relationships and Percentages
5. Rational Number Arithmetic
6. Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
7. Angles, Triangles, Prisms
8. Probability and Sampling
This approach to learning is new to teachers and students alike. It is important that we all keep an open mind and positive attitude as we all adjust to this new approach.
The 7th grade common core curriculum will challenge you to apply what you have learned in your previous math classes to solve multi-step math word problems. Math is all about trial and error. Mistakes are proof that you are trying...and that is all I ask. Just give me your very best effort and you might be surprised what you will learn :) I'm looking forward to a wonderful year full of growth at KMS!!
