What is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program that encourages high quality and high quantity reading. The titles on the book list were intentionally chosen due to their thought-provoking nature. The list was compiled by the North Carolina School Library Media Association. At the end of the year, students will demonstrate their knowledge of the books in a "battle," which is a team-based competition.
How do students participate?
Students will read 13 to 14 books from the book list throughout the school year. Our first two meetings will be on Monday, September 17 and Monday, September 24 from 4:00 to 5:00. We will be meeting two to three times a month. At these meetings, we will be practicing questions about the books, Their titles and authors. Students are expected to read three books each month beginning in October. By following this Schedule, each student will have read 12 books by the end of January. They will need to have all 13 or 14 books ready by mid-February.
Rules and Regulations
Twelve students will be chosen for the team. Depending on our numbers, students may be eliminated at the end of each month until we have our team of twelve students. The students should read and read often. Students will need to have a Battle of the Books permission slip singed and brought back to the library to participate. The competition will be held off campus sometime in the spring.
