Hola a todos! My name is Mrs. LaFave, and I am the K-8 Spanish teacher at Johnson Street Global Studies. I am so excited to join this school community and support its mission of developing global citizens by teaching about the Spanish language and its cultures.
My vision for our Spanish classroom revolves around building community, confidence, and mutual understanding. I believe that learning another language communicates respect and appreciation of others, which serves as the glue of our communities and the world. Beyond the community benefits, learning a language allows individuals to develop resilience. No one is expected to communicate perfectly when learning a new language. We all fail in the process of learning, and misunderstandings are inevitable. Through this failure, however, our perseverance is strengthened, and we are liberated from the fear of making a mistake. Therefore, students will not only learn that they are free to fail (as long as they try again) in my class, but they will also become free to express themselves in new ways and access materials that were previously indecipherable. This year students will develop confidence through the language learning process, realizing that their brains are capable of comprehending what once seemed impossible to understand. My job as a Spanish teacher is simply to expose students to the Spanish language in familiar and understandable context, and the bravery, curiosity, and talents of my students will allow learning to occur.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about class or ways to support your students' language learning at home.
