A little about me...
-
Hi everyone! My name is Mark Johnston and I'm entering my fifth year teaching with Guilford County Schools. I teach World History, as well as American History - Civics & Government. In addition to teaching at Grimsley, I also have the honor and privilege of being the Head Coach of the Grimsley Women's Soccer Team where I will be entering my 7th season next spring. In the fall, I also help the Men's program as an Assistant Coach and as the Head JV Men's Soccer Coach.
I am first and foremost proud to be a Whirlie! As a member of the Class of '84, I am a former student/athlete at this incredible school. I played soccer for my mentor, friend, and predecessor at Grimsley, Coach Herk DeGraw. My oldest son also attended school here and graduated from GHS in 2018... and my wife just retired from Grimsley last year having spent the last decade of her career at GHS. I have a firm belief that this is the finest public school in North Carolina, without a doubt. My students will hopefully come to share my passion for this school, learn some of its amazing history, and help contribute to its continued success.
I came to this profession a little later in life than many. After having spent 20 years in athletic administration and business management, I went back to school at Guilford College so I could pursue my passions -- History, Political Science, and Education. In 2014 I graduated and began teaching at Dudley High School where I taught American History I & II (honors) for two years. When Dudley's enrollment dropped and they lost multiple teaching positions, I moved onto Northeast Middle School where for the past two years I've taught 6th grade World History and served on the school's Culture Improvement Team.
I hope to make this an exciting classroom to be in... one that is SAFE & equitable, organized and fun, challenging and yet manageable. If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don't hesitate to share those with me at johnstm@gcsnc.com. Thanks so much and I look forward to a great year!
