My name is Mr. Sams and I'm teaching World History this year. I'm from Greensboro, an ASU Grad (Social Science/Geography), and this is my 13th year in education. I taught at NGMS from 2009-2013 and am happy to be rejoining the Northern community! I probably taught some of your older siblings in middle school. I designed, fundraised, and built the Outdoor Classroom at NGMS, coached and won back-to-back boys/girls soccer championships, and loved being at the school. This is my second year at NGHS.
I love to travel and learn about other cultures and places. I've lived and taught in Australia, Japan, Uganda, Senegal, and most recently Romania. I've chaperoned several international student trips and hopefully when the world gets back to "normal," we can take more student trips! Where would you like to go? I've been fortunate to have traveled to many countries and have stories from each place. The world becomes a smaller place when you get out and discover people and places, which helps you to gain a new worldview. Traveling also helps you see the US in a different perspective.
In my free time I enjoy hanging out with our little girl who was born in Senegal, dreaming up new places to visit with my wife, riding my Ural or Royal Enfield motorcycle, eating good food, woodworking, drone flying, 3D printing, camping, and trying new things. I have no pets, no social media, and no drama!
How does all of this relate to World History? It's far easier to discover what you know and don't know (about a topic/subject) when you are in the company of others who have learned about the US as an outsider. Your ideas are challenged and you understand that every country teaches about the world from their perspective, and the result is (often) healthy dialogue and new ways of seeing what you have learned in the past. The world is a dynamic and changing place. I look forward to diving into World History with students to help explain and understand the past in order to make some sense of the events of today.
