Mrs. Born's 5th Grade Class

  • Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!

    About Me

I grew up up in a small, rural town (a lot like Stokesdale!) about 20 miles north of Syracuse, New York. Most of my extended family still lives in the Greater Syracuse area, but my parents will be joining us in North Carolina sometime this fall!  I attended Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC for undergrad. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Art in history. I then attended law school at Syracuse Univeristy College of Law with the intentions of moving back south after graduating. I wanted to attend SU Law because both my grandparents had attended SUCOL, and my grandmother was in the first class that accepted women. Instead, I was offered a great job out of law school at a boutique law firm in Rochester, NY. The move south would have to wait.

The law firm was an employment law litigation firm. We mostly represented employees in large scale class actions for unpaid wages. Many of our class actions were against nationwide employers, so I traveled a lot, and litigation meant many late nights and long hours. After having my children, it became clear to me that the law was not my passion. After nearly 8 years of practicing, I made the decision to take a break to stay home with my children while they were still young. I had missed too many bedtimes, too many "firsts" and just too much time that I knew I would never get back.

While home with my children, I started teaching online. I had actually started undergrad at Coastal as an elementary education major but switched majors when I decided to go to law school. Teaching online, I quickly realized that education was my passion and made the decision to take the steps necessary to work towards my teaching career.

In July 2018, my husband Jeremy, my two children, Lucas and Madeline, and I relocated to Stokesdale. We quickly came to love the Stokesdale Elementary staff and community. I became involved the following year with the Stokesdale Elementary PTA, and started working in the office while I waited for a teaching position to become available.

I am thrilled to be a part of the 5th grade team this year!
