Welcome to my school website! I am Elizabeth Strable, the proud school counselor at Stokesdale Elementary School. Before taking the position of counselor at SES, I was the school counselor at Montlieu Academy of Technology in High Point for 10 years. I am originally from Greensboro and I earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master's degree from North Carolina A&T State University. I am an only child and also have an only child, Woodrow, my son, who is turning 7 in November. When I'm not at work, I enjoy hanging out with my son, going to the pool, reading, writing, watching shows, attending church, going to the movies, and being with friends and family.
The American School Counseling Association describes the job of a professional school counselor as, "someone who helps all students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills, and plan for post-secondary options (higher education, military, workforce)." (ASCA, 2023). This definition helps to explain why the term "guidance counselor" has fallen out of favor, since the job duties span far beyond simply teaching career and vocational awareness. The best part of my job is working with students and being a part of their growth and development. At Stokesdale, my specific job duties are: Section 504 coordinator, conducting monthly classroom lessons, crisis intervention, one-on-one student conferencing, chairing social emotional learning and attendance teams, and membership on the school improvement team.
As we begin this school year, please take a moment to fill out the parent survey linked below. Results from this survey will help me to determine the types of lessons I deliver to classrooms and the types of small groups I pull. Additionally, this year the school counseling department is requiring that parents sign informed consent if their student meets with the school counselor in an ongoing manner. Therefore, if I plan to work with your student in an ongoing way I will send home a document. Finally, I appreciate your partnership in this work. I look forward to serving you and your children!
