    Western opened in the fall of 1968, previously known as Guilford High School.  WGHS is home to the Fighting Hornets and the school colors are black and gold.  In 2000, major renovations happened to the school, adding new wings for the cultural arts and math/world language departments.  In 2014, WG became the first school in North Carolina to host the AP Capstone Program.  In 2017, the new gym was finally finished.  In 2018, Western is celebrating it's 50th year in education.
