    Good Evening Tiger Families. This is Principal Chase Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, February 19th – Friday, February 23rd.
    We will continue with WIDA ACCESS testing this week. If you have questions regarding your child’s testing in ESL, please reach out to Ms. Duboy.

    WGMS to visit Elementary Schools:
    Our music programs are on the move next week as they travel to Alderman, Guilford, and Jefferson elementary schools to perform for 5th graders to create interest in our music programs. Please return permission forms for students to participate in this trip which will take place Tuesday (Alderman), Wednesday (Guilford), and Thursday (Jefferson) of this week.

    PROGRESS REPORTS:
    Students will receive progress reports as we approach the midpoint for Quarter 3. Please review and return signed copies of your child’s reports.

    BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPIRIT WEEK:
    Monday, February 26th – Favorite Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Day
    Tuesday, February 27th – Dress as a famous Black Figure Past or Present
    Wednesday, February 28th – Unity Day (Wear red, yellow, and/or green)
    Thursday, February 29th – Throwback Thursday (70s, 80s, 90s)
    Friday, March 1st – Blackout Day
     
    For your convenience, a flyer is linked to this week's announcements. Students are still required to follow dress code policies.

    Spring Sports Reminder:
    Try Outs for Boy’s and Girl’s Track, Baseball and Softball will be held on March 6th, 7th, and 8th immediately after school. Sports Participation Packets must be hand delivered by the student to Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips ONLY by Monday, March 4th by 3:30 PM. *** NO EXCEPTIONS *** Packets can be found with Coach Sexton and Coach Phillips as well as in the front office. Students who have already tried out for a sport this year must see Coach Sexton or Coach Phillips by Monday, March 4th at 3:30 PM to check the status of their physical as well as their eligibility. Eligibility for Spring Sports is based on Semester 1 of this school year. All sports-related information and documents can also be found on the Western Guilford Middle Website under Athletics.

    Upcoming Dates: Tuesday, February 27th is our monthly school leadership meeting from 3:50pm – 5:50pm. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your parent representative.
    If you’re interested in participating in our Career Day and share your career with students or would like to assist with mock interviews, please reach out to Ms. Gale-Lane at galelae@gcsnc.com. Our Career Day is March 15th.

    Recordatorio para los Deportes de Primavera: 
    Las pruebas de Atletismo, Béisbol y Sóftbol para niños y niñas, seran los días 6, 7 y 8 de Marzo, después de clases. Los Paquetes de Deportivos deben ser entregados personalmente por el estudiante al entrenador Sexton o la entrenadora Phillips SOLAMENTE antes del Lunes 4 de Marzo a las 3:30 p.m. *** SIN EXCEPCIONES ***. Pueden solicitar los paquetes al entrenador Sexton y Phillips, así como en la oficina principal. Los estudiantes que ya hayan tenido pruebas deportivas este año deben ver al entrenador Sexton o la entrenadora Phillips para verificar su Elegibilidad antes del Lunes 4 de Marzo a las 3:30 pm.   • Weekly Announcements 2/4/24

    Good Evening Tiger Families. This is Principal Chase Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, February 5th – Friday, February 9th.

    Report Cards:
    Report cards were given to students Wednesday, January 31st. If you did not receive a report card from your student, please reach out to the homeroom teacher or front office and we will provide another copy. Report cards should be signed and returned by Monday, February 5th.

    NWEA Assessments:
    Students will take their NWEA Reading Assessment Tuesday, February 6th and their NWEA Math Assessment Thursday, February 8th. The two assessments will determine their growth from the fall assessment. This is an adaptive assessment and will identify what students can do based on their current knowledge. We will use this data to determine small group instruction.

    ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:
    Thursday, February 8th our Girls’, and Boys’ basketball teams will travel to Kernodle for games starting at 4:45pm and our wrestling team will host Kernodle at home for a match at 5pm. Please come out and support your Tiger Athletics.

    HOMELESS VETERAN SERVICE PROJECT:
    This year we will support our Homeless Veterans Project Friday, January 26th – Friday, February 9th.
    Let’s give back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country. We would like each grade level to provide the following items:

    6th Grade: Herbal Tea & Coffee
    7th Grade: Grits
    8th Grade: Socks

    If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school.

    QUARTER 2 AWARDS PROGRAM:
    Friday, February 9th, we will have our Quarter 2 Awards Program. Homeroom teachers are sending invitations home with students who will be highlighted for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, and Leader in Me Awards. Families are invited to this event. The times for each grade level is as follow:
    8th Grade – 8:30 to 9:00
    7th Grade – 9:30 to 10:00
    6th Grade – 10:15 – 10:45

    Boletas de Calificaciones:
    Las boletas de calificaciones se entregaron a los estudiantes el Miércoles 31 de Enero. Si no recibió una boleta de calificaciones de su estudiante, comuníquese con el maestro de aula o con la oficina principal y le proporcionaremos otra copia. Las boletas de calificaciones deben firmarse y devolverse antes del Lunes 5 de Febrero.

    Evaluaciones NWEA:
    Los estudiantes tomarán su evaluación de Lectura NWEA el Martes 6 de Febrero y la evaluacion NWEA de matemáticas el Jueves 8 de Febrero. Las dos evaluaciones determinarán su crecimiento a partir de la evaluación de Otoño. Esta es una evaluación adaptativa e identificará lo que los estudiantes pueden hacer en función de su conocimiento actual. Usaremos estos datos para determinar la instrucción en grupos pequeños.

    ATLETISMO ESTA SEMANA:
    El Jueves 8 de Febrero, nuestros equipos de Baloncesto Femenino y Masculino viajarán a Kernodle para los juegos que comenzarán a las 4:45 p. m. y nuestro equipo de Lucha Libre recibirá a Kernodle en casa para un partido a las 5 p. m. Por favor, venga y apoye a Tiger Atleta.

    PROYECTO DE SERVICIO PARA VETERANOS SIN HOGAR:
    Este año apoyaremos nuestro Proyecto de Veteranos sin Hogar desde el  Viernes 26 de Enero al Viernes 9 de Febrero.

    Devolvamos algo a quienes han sacrificado tanto por nuestro país. 
    Nos gustaría que cada nivel de grado proporcione los siguientes elementos:
    6to grado: Té de hierbas y Café
    7mo grado: Sémola
    8vo grado: Calcetines
    Si tiene preguntas, no dude en comunicarse con la escuela.

    PROGRAMA DE PREMIOS DEL 2do TRIMESTRE :
    El Viernes 9 de Febrero tendremos nuestro programa de premios del 2do Trimestre. Los maestros de aula están enviando invitaciones a casa con los estudiantes que serán destacados para los premios Asistencia Perfecta, Cuadro de Honor y Líder en Mí. Las familias están invitadas a este evento. Las Horas para cada nivel de grado son los siguientes:

    Good Evening Tiger Families. This is Principal Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, January 1st, - Friday, January 5th.

    I am wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hope you had a wonderful holiday. Welcome to 2024! As I reflect upon the 2023 year, I am excited about the growth opportunities in Tiger Nation! I look forward to what 2024 brings Tiger Nation this year. Let’s finish STRONG!

    Monday, January 1st is New Year’s and GCS will be closed for the holiday.

    Tuesday, January 2nd is a teacher workday and school is closed for students.

    Students will return to school Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024.

    Upcoming Events:

    • Monday, January 15th – GCS will be closed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
    • Wednesday, January 17th – Ms. Shebish and the orchestra/chorus program will host their winter concert at 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Room
    • Friday, January 19th – This is the last day for Quarter 2 and the end of the 1st
    • Monday, January 22nd is a Teacher Workday and no school for students.
    • I wish you a very Happy New Year and we look forward to receiving students Wednesday January 3rd, 2024 no earlier than 7:45am. Have a wonderful week Tiger Nation!

  • Weekly Announcements 11/26/23

    Good Evening Tiger Families, this is Principal Chase Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School with announcements for the week of Monday, November 27th – Friday, December 1st.

    I hope everyone enjoyed their families during the Thanksgiving Holiday. We look forward to receiving our students tomorrow no earlier than 7:45am.

    Monthly Leadership Meeting:

    Tuesday, November 28th, from 3:50pm – 5:50pm, we will have our monthly school leadership meeting in the media center. All stakeholders are welcome to attend, however, only members of the leadership team can vote.

    Native American Heritage Night:

    Wednesday, November 29th we will host the district wide Native American Heritage Night at WGMS from 6pm – 8pm. Vendors and food will be available for purchase. Please come out as the district highlights the importance of Native American Heritage in our communities and schools.

    PTA Schoolwide Dance:

    Friday, December 8th, our PTA will host a schoolwide dance from 6pm – 8pm in the multipurpose room. We will begin selling tickets Friday, December 1st only during arrival in the morning, Tickets in advance are $5 and $7 at the door. This is a cash only event for entry and concessions. If students receive ISS/OSS from November 6th – December 8th, they are only permitted to attend the dance with a parent/guardian as their chaperone. Please reach out if you have any questions.

    Espero que todos hayan disfrutado de sus familias durante las vacaciones de Acción de Gracias. Esperamos recibir a nuestros estudiantes mañana no antes de las 7:45 am. 

    Reunión Mensual de Liderazgo: 

    El Martes 28 de Noviembre, de 3:50 p. m. a 5:50 p. m., tendremos nuestra reunión mensual de liderazgo escolar en el centro de medios. Todas las partes interesadas pueden asistir, sin embargo, solo los miembros del equipo de liderazgo pueden votar. 

    Noche de la Herencia Nativa Americana: 

    El Miércoles 29 de Noviembre tendremos en todo el distrito la Noche de la Herencia Nativa Americana en WGMS de 6 p.m. a 8 p.m. Habrá vendedores y comida disponible para su compra. Por favor asista mientras el distrito destaca la importancia de la Herencia de los Nativos Americanos en nuestras comunidades y escuelas. 

    PTA Baile de toda la Escuela: 

    El Viernes 8 de Diciembre, nuestra PTA organizará el baile para toda la escuela de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m. en el salón de usos múltiples. Comenzaremos a vender boletos el Viernes 1 de Diciembre solo durante la llegada en la mañana. Los boletos cuestan $5 por adelantado y $7 en la puerta. Este es un evento solo en efectivo para las entradas y concesiones. Si los estudiantes reciben suspensiones ISS/OSS del 6 de Noviembre al 8 de Diciembre, solo se les permitirá asistir al baile con un padre o tutor como acompañante.     Good Afternoon Tiger Families!
    Happy Veteran’s Day to all Veteran’s who served or currently serving in our Armed Forces! We appreciate each of you for giving your lives to protect our country! We salute you today, tomorrow, and forever!

    Student/Staff Volleyball Game:
    Monday, November 13th from 4pm – 6pm, we will have a student vs staff volleyball game. The current girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams will play against each other at 4pm and then the students will play against the staff immediately following the first games.
    Admission to the event is 3 non-perishable items to support our Food Drive for the upcoming holidays.

    Students can stay after school for this event. Students will need to have their permission slip completed to attend this event.
    I am attached the flyer and the permission form to the email and remind messages.

    PTA Schoolwide Dance:
    We will have a schoolwide dance Friday, December 8th from 6pm – 8pm. Cost is $5 in advance and $3 at the door. We will sell tickets during arrival after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Those trying out should be picked up in the bus parking lot no later than 5:30 PM on tryout days.

    Good Evening Tiger Nation, this is Principal Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School with announcements for the week of Monday, October 23rd – Friday, October 27th.

    JOIN THE WGMS PTA

    October 23rd – October 27th is RED RIBBON SPIRIT WEEK. Red Ribbon week is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States. This year’s theme is BE KIND TO YOUR MIND, LIVE DRUG FREE. Each day this week we will have a different theme.

    Monday is “Team up against drugs” and wear your favorite sports team jersey or t-shirt.

    Tuesday is “Dress to Impress” – my future is too bright to use drugs. WGMS Picture Day

    Wednesday is “Red Ribbon Day” wear red & take the drug-free pledge

    Thursday is “Wacky Tacky Day” wear your tacky clothes. Doing drugs is tacky.

    Friday is “WGMS is drug free” – wear your WGMS spirit wear.

    All clothing must follow the Dress Code Guidelines. Students who are inappropriately dressed will be asked to change.

    PICTURE DAY:

    October 24th is Fall Picture Day. These will be our Yearbook Pictures. Information was sent home with students with students Tuesday, October 17th regarding picture day.

    ATHLETICS:

    Monday, October 23rd Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball at home against NE at 4:45pm

    Wednesday, October 25th we will travel to Kernodle for a Football game at 5pm

    Thursday, October 26th Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball at home against Mendenhall at 4:45pm.

    BOOK-O-WEEN:

    October 31st is BOOK-O-WEEN and is an opportunity for students and staff to represent a character from their favorite novel/book. Please see the attached documents under student support services to review the expectations for Book-O-Ween.

    Additional Updates:

    We will begin our Interim Assessments this week. Thursday, October 26th, 7th grade math and 8th grade science will take their quarterly benchmarks in the morning. Please have students arrive on time so we can start at 8:45am. Students will be tested on standards taught during the first quarter.

    Students have two and half weeks before the end of the quarter. Please review Parent Portal, PowerSchool, and Canvas to see if your child has missing assignments. Please reach out to your child’s teachers to request extensions and/or opportunity for students to turn in missing assignments for partial grades. Each teacher developed their late work/missing assignment policies. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teachers.

    TIGER CART DONATIONS:

    Families, please consider donating to the Leaders of the Pack Action Team. The Leaders of the Pack is an action team that works to support student engagement throughout the school year. They are seeking donations to supply the Mobile Tiger Cart with snacks and hygiene products. Students can purchase all items utilizing their Leaderchips which they receive from staff throughout the year. Please see the attached flyer for specific items.

    Good Evening Tiger Families, this is Principal Arrington with announcements for Monday, October 16th – Friday, October 20th.

    ATHLETICS THIS WEEK:

    Monday, October 16th we will host Kiser for Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball games at 4:45pm. Cost is $3 for students and $5 for adults. This is a cash only event.

    Thursday, October 19th, we will travel to Hairston Middle for Girls’ Soccer/Boys’ Volleyball games at 4:45pm. Please come out to support your Tiger Athletics.

    PTA MEETING:

    We will have our first PTA meeting of the year Tuesday, October 17th 5:30pm – 6:45pm in the media center. Please come out and support your local PTA.

    RED RIBBON SPIRIT WEEK:

    Good Evening Tiger Families, this is Principal Chase Arrington with announcements for the week of Monday, October 9th – Friday, October 13th.

    We will have our National Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week Oct. 9th – Oct. 13th. I will attach the various activities each day and highlight them briefly here:

    • Monday – wear your favorite Hispanic soccer team jersey or paint your face.
    • Tuesday – Dress like a famous Hispanic Figure
    • Wednesday – Greet everyone in Spanish
    • Thursday – Dress as a character from the movie Coco or Encanto
    • Friday – CARNIVAL OF COLORS DAY: 6th grade wear blue, 7th grade wear orange, 8th grade wear green, teachers wear red and all others wear yellow.

    Fall Sports Tryouts:

    Girls’ Soccer and Boys’ Volleyball tryouts will be held Monday, October 9th and Tuesday, October 10th immediately following dismissal until 5pm. We are no longer accepting packet. Please have those trying out picked up by 5:15pm.

    Tuesday, October 10th, we will have our Academically Gifted Parent Night from 5:30pm – 6:30pm in the media center. Come out and hear the differentiation taking place for students identified AIG. Attached is a flyer for your convenience.

    Wednesday, October 11th, we will host Mendenhall Middle in a football game starting at 5pm. Students are $3, and adults are $5. We will sell concession. This is a cash only event.

    We will practice two safety drills this week with students. Those drills are lock down and tornado drills. Our lock down procedures is in the event there is an intruder in our building and/or there is imminent danger in the area. The tornado drill procedure is in the event we have a tornado watch or warning. I will provide families with a ConnectEd Call and Remind message letting you know we have completed our drills.

    Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week (English & Spanish)

    Buenas Noches Familias de Western Guilford Middle, soy la Sra. Castro con un mensaje del director Chase Arrington con los anuncios  de la semana del 9 al 13 de Octubre.

    Tendremos la Semana Nacional de Celebración de la Herencia Hispana del 9 al 13 de Octubre. Adjuntaré las distintas actividades de cada día y las cuales serán:

    • Lunes - Usa la camiseta de tu Equipo de Fútbol Hispano favorito o píntate la cara.
    • Martes – Vístete como una Famosa Figura Hispana
    • Miércoles – Saluda a todos en Español
    • Jueves – Vístete como un personaje de la película Coco o Encanto.
    • Viernes – DÍA DEL CARNAVAL DE COLORES: 6º grado Azul, 7º grado Naranja, 8º grado Verde, los maestros Rojo y todos los demás Amarillo.

    Pruebas Deportivas de Otoño:

    Las Pruebas de Fútbol Femenino y Voleybol Masculino se llevarán a cabo el Lunes 9 de Octubre y el Martes 10 de Octubre inmediatamente después de la salida hasta las 5 p.m. Ya no aceptamos paquetes. Por favor, recojan a sus estudiantes antes de las 5:15 p.m.

    El Martes 10 de Octubre tendremos nuestra Noche de Padres Académicamente Dotados de 5:30 p.m. a 6:30 p.m. en la biblioteca. Ven y escucha la diferenciación que se está llevando a cabo para los estudiantes identificados AIG. Adjunto encontrará un folleto para su comodidad.

    El Miércoles 11 de Octubre recibiremos a Mendenhall Middle en un partido de Fútbol a partir de las 5 p.m. Los estudiantes cuestan $3 y los adultos $5. Venderemos concesión. Este es un evento solo en efectivo.

    Practicaremos dos Simulacros de Seguridad esta semana con los estudiantes. Esos son de  Aislamiento y Tornado. Los procedimientos de aislamiento son en caso que haya un intruso en nuestro edificio y/o haya un peligro inminente en el área. El procedimiento de simulacro de tornado es en caso de que tengamos una alerta o alerta de tornado. Proporcionaré a las familias un mensaje en Remind y ConnectEd para informarles que hemos completado nuestros simulacros.

    2 y 3 de Noviembre – Son días laborales para maestros, No hay clases para los estudiantes

  • Weekly Announcements 9/24/23

    Good Evening Tiger Nation, this is Principal Chase Arrington bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, September 25th – Friday, September 29th. 

    Monday, September 25th is a Teacher Workday. There is no school for students. Please have students review their work from the previous week and continue reading their respective novels for Language Arts. Additionally, please review the Newsletters attached for each grade level’s assignments and upcoming projects, quizzes, or tests. 

    Tuesday, September 26th we will have our monthly School Leadership/Lighthouse Meeting from 3:50 – 5:50 in the media center. This is an open event for all community members to attend. 

    ATHLETICS THIS WEEK: 

    Tuesday, September 26th we will host our Boys Soccer Team and Girls Volleyball Team in games against Kernodle at 4:45pm.  

    Wednesday, September 27th we will host Hairston Middle for our second home football game at 5pm. 

    Thursday, September 28th Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball will host games against Jackson Middle at 4:45pm. 

    Students are $3 for entry and adults are $5. This is a cash only event. Concessions will be sold.

    2023-2024 School Calendar

    This message is specific for ONLY 7th Grade Families: We still have several students who do not have updated immunization records and/or shots for Tdap or MCV. If your child fits this category, they will receive a letter Tuesday, September 26th stating they cannot return to school until the families provide documentation of updated immunization records. These students will be suspended beginning Wednesday, September 27th until proper documentation to the school is provided. You may drop off records to the school, have the doctor’s office fax us at 336-316-5837 or email Nurse Goins at goinsh2@gcsnc.com.   • Weekly Announcements 9/17/23

    Good Evening Tiger Nation, this is Principal Chase Arrington at Western Guilford Middle School bringing you announcements for the week of Monday, September 18th – Friday, September 22nd.

    We are excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month September 15th – October 15th. Attached are activities we will do to celebrate the Hispanic Culture Oct. 9th – October 13th. Students and staff have the option to participate in this spirit week! Students must follow WGMS dress code policy during spirit week unless otherwise noted in the spirit week attire.

    Walk the Schedule Night:

    Tuesday, September 19th we will host our Walk the Schedule/Title I Curriculum Night from 5pm – 7:30pm. We will begin in the multi-purpose room with a welcome from our PTA President and Campus Life. Principal Arrington have an overview of the school’s Title I/Curriculum Update. At 6pm, families will participate in walking their child’s schedules and receiving updates since the start of school.

    7th Grade Immunization Update:

    Parents, if you have immunizations for 7th graders, this is a great opportunity to bring those documents. If any 7th grader does not have updated shot records, they will be excluded from school through suspension beginning September 27th. Students needing updated shots will receive documents Monday, September 18th. Please contact Ms. Hill, Ms. Stanton, or Nurse Goins for questions.

    Athletics:

    Boys Soccer/Girls Volleyball will travel to Mendenhall Middle Monday, September 18th for games starting at 4:45pm.

    We will host our first home football game Wednesday, September 20th at 5pm against Kiser Middle. Children are $3 and adults are $5. Concessions will be sold for both events. Athletic events are cash only.

    NWEA ASSESSMENT:

    Our Schoolwide goal is to grow students in reading and math 10 points on their RIT score from Fall to Spring on the NWEA MAP Assessment. This assessment is adaptive and determine the skills students currently have compared to their same age peers across the nation. We will give our fall NWEA assessments Wednesday, September 20th and Thursday, September 21st. Please have students arrive on time so we can begin our assessments by 8:50am. The assessments will take up to 3 hours. During the testing session, students will not be permitted to leave early. Contact the school if you have questions.

    Upcoming Dates:

    Monday, September 25th will be a teacher workday. GCS will be closed to students. Please plan accordingly.
