    The following are announcements for the week of June 9th 2019

     

    Monday, June 10th is our last day of school!  Tomorrow is a regular full school day- Please remember that we must have a note to release students to an adult other than a parent if you wish to pick up your child early.

     

    Tomorrow will be a SMOD free day- no leaderships will be necessary.  Any student who turns in gently used, clean SMOD for our 2019-20 SMOD closet will receive a ticket for a drawing.

     

    Tomorrow, our PTSO will sponsor our end of year celebration during encore classes.  In order to be eligible to participate, students must have no behavior infractions during the 4th nine weeks, and have no pending library or cafeteria fees.  Please check with Ms. Denny in the media center, Ms. Walz to pay fee cafeteria, and Coach Sexton to pay fundraiser chocolate balances at school tomorrow. 

     

     

    Yearbooks are on sale, and are $30- first come first serve! This is a great way to remember a fantastic school year- there is a limited supply- first come, first serve! Please see Ms. McNaught to purchase yours today!

     

     

    Students who are to be included in the EOG retest June 11-14 received notices on Friday. If they were not at school on Friday, their notices were included in the US mail.  We also sent a separate connect ed to students who are attending and who will not be attending yesterday. For students who will be attending and riding the bus, the bus routes have been posted on the WGMS website. Only students who receive a notice are to attend school June 11-14 from 8:30-2Pm.  Please contact the office with questions.

     

     

     

    Report cards and grade placements for the 2019-20 year will be mailed out by no later than the last week of June. Placements will be based on students' academic portfolio during the 2018-19 school year, which includes EOG scores, grades and other assessment results.

    The following are announcements for the week of June 2nd:

     

    Thank you to our PTSO for a wonderful 8th grade dance on Friday evening. In spite of the crazy weather our students had a fantastic time!

     

    EOG testing will continue on Monday, June 3rd and Tuesday, June 4th- students will take the NCFE in Science and SS. Please be sure students are at school on time each day as we prepare for testing, and please do not pick students up early unless it is an absolute emergency. Also be reminded that students cannot wear slides, pajamas, or bring blankets or stuffed animals to school.  Cell phones on testing days are a testing misadministration and students who have phone are subject to serious consequences. Thank you for helping our students be successful during testing!

     

    We are in need of proctors for testing on Monday and Tuesday. If you are 18 and available on any of the testing dates, please contact Mrs. Draper in the front office and or be at school by 7:45 to help.

     

    Letters with EOG Reading and 8th grade science results and invitations for summer enrichment retest will go home on Monday June 3rd. All students will participate in enrichment groups through June 10th.  Selected students will participate in  Enrichment and Retesting Tuesday June 11th through Friday, June 14th.  Students who are retesting June 11-14 must return their parent permission slips to school by Wednesday, June 5th so we can arrange transportation. 

     

    There are no longer late buses on Wednesdays and Thursdays- all students will be go home on regular buses through the end of the school year.

     

    We will send home permission slips for students who are participating in the a special movie on the afternoon of June 6th for students who have met their Wildly Important Goals this year- students will vote to view Captain America or Black Panther on Thursday, June 6th.  If you do not want your child to participate, please return the permission slip that will go home. Otherwise, students will view the movie on Thursday.

     

    On June 7th, we invite you to attend our Awards Ceremonies by grade level:

    8th- 8:30

    7th-10:15

    6th -12:30

     

    Please be sure you have your NC Driver’s license or ID with you if you wish to check out students early. We will check students out prior to the ceremonies.  If you wish for someone different to check out your child, please bring a note- we cannot accept permission over the phone.

     

    We want everyone to enjoy the End of Year celebrations on June 10th.   To be sure that your student can participate check to see if:

     

    •         All cafeteria charges are cleared?

    •         All Media Center books have been turned in?

    •         All Candy money ($60 per box sold) turned in?

    •         All athletic uniforms turned in?

    •         All tablets turned in?

     

    Remember, if your student has outstanding fees or has not returned books or tablets he/she will not be able to participate in the end of year celebrations.

     

    The PTSO will host our End of Year PTSO Celebration on Monday, June 10, which is the last day of school.  The Celebration will be held during Encore times.  This is an event for the students to play games, sign yearbooks and enjoy treats.  Contact the WGMS PTSO if you wish to help or chaperone.

    Good evening, WGMS families,

     

    School will be closed on Monday, May 27th in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. School will reopen on Tuesday, May 28th.

     

    EOG testing will begin on Wednesday, May 29th through Tuesday, June 4th. Please be sure students are at school on time each day as we prepare for testing, and please do not pick students up early unless it is an absolute emergency- thank you for helping our students be successful during testing!

     

    We are in need of proctors for testing. If you are 18 and available on any of the testing dates, please contact Mrs. Draper in the front office.

     

    Please note that selected students may be invited to retest ELA and 8th grade science based on the results of their first test administration.  We will notify students who will be invited to retest by Tuesday, June 4th. Reteaching and retesting for selected students will take place June 5th  through Friday, June 14th

    Our 6th and 7th grade Orchestra, Chorus and Band Spring Concert will be held on Tuesday, May 21st.  8th grade Orchestra, Chorus and Band Spring Concert  will be held on Thursday, May 23rd.  Call time for music students is 5:45 and both concerts will begin at 6:30pm.  We look forward to seeing you!

    Our May/June newsletter is now released- paper copies will be sent to parents who requested them last week, or you can check our website. If you would like a paper copy, please contact the office.

    The following are the announcements for the week of May 12th, 2019

     

    Saturday, May 18th is our last day of Saturday Academy- it will be held from 9-12pm. Students who attend will earn a HW pass, and a jeans pass for Monday, May 20th 6th and 7th grade are now closed for enrollment- there are limited slots in 8th grade- please submit an application if you wish to attend. Remember that bus service is not offered-Car riders and walkers are welcome to attend.

    Mark your calendars- our 6th and 7th grade Orchestra, Chorus and Band concert will be held on Tuesday, May 21st.  8th grade Orchestra, Chorus and Band Concerts will be held on Thursday, May 23rd.  Call time for music students is 5:45 and both concerts will begin at 6:30pm.  We look forward to seeing you!

    The following are announcements for the week of May 5th, 2019:

     

    We want to thank our students and parents for a record turn out in Saturday Academy this past Saturday! In addition to preparing for upcoming EOG tests, students who participated received a jeans pass for Tuesday, May 7th and a HW pass to be used in one core class.  6th grade is currently full, however, there are a few spaces open in 7th and 8th grade.  If you would like to participate, please return the permission slip or contact the office. The final two Saturday Academy sessions will be held May 11th and May 18th from 9-12. Remember, no bus service is available now, only car riders and walkers.

     

    We are seeking proctors for upcoming EOG tests, which will begin on May 29th, through June 4th. Proctors must be 18th years, old, and most testing lasts from 8:00-12pm. This is a great opportunity for HS and college community service.  If you are available on any of those dates, please contact Ms. Draper in the front office. 

     

    Monday 5/6-WGMS Superhero Day-wear your favorite Superhero t-shirt (with jeans)to be a hero-

    Say or do something “Super” kind for your teachers!

              

    Tuesday 5/7- Thank you note Day!

    Students write your Teacher a Thank-you note. Don’t forget the Administrators, Encore ,Cafeteria, Bus Drivers and support staff members!

             

    Wednesday 5/8 Thanks for helping me Bloom  Day-Bring a flower or plant to thank teachers for helping you bloom all year!

              

    Thursday 5/9-Thanks for being Sweet Day!

    Bring in Fruit or a sweet treat for your Teacher (s).

             

    Friday 5/10- Help the Teacher Day!

    Bring in school supplies. Ask your teacher what is needed in their classroom (s).

     

    These are only suggestions- please feel free to be creative in thanking our teachers and staff!

     

    Interim reports will go home with students on Wednesday, May 8th.  Please sign and return them to school on Thursday, May 9th.

     

    Friday, May 10th is a SMOD free day.  Students can participate with 14 Leaderchips.  Friday, PTSO will also host our final school-wide school dance from 6-8pm.  Admission is $5 and concessions will be sold.

    The following are announcements for the week of April 28th, 2019

    We hope that everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! Students will return to school tomorrow, Monday, April 29th.

    There will be a WGMS Leadership Team meeting on Tuesday, April 30th at 3:30pm. There will be a PTSO planning meeting following at 6pm. All who are interested in planning events, or in being considered for officers for the 2019-20 school year are invited to attend.

     

    There will be no school on Wednesday, May 1st.  It will be a teacher work day.

    WGMS Athletics for this week:

    4/30 – Track at home versus Swann at 4:45

    5/2 – Baseball/Softball at home versus Eastern at 4:45

    All events are $2 for students and $4 for parents

    5/3 – Guilford County Middle School Track Championships at Dudley H.S. at 4:15. Admission is $5.00 and children under age 6 are free.

     

    There will be a Parent Focus Groups for the parents of Academically Gifted students this Thursday, May 2nd at 5:30pm in the media center. Please contact Mrs. Sims if you have questions- we look forward to seeing you there!

    This Friday, we excited to present our First leadership Day to our WGMS families and communities! Student leaders will tour families through our lead blocks, our step team, drumline and music groups will perform, and you can take a sneak peek at our student led International Day Activities! The Leadership Day will take place from 9-10::45 and all are welcome!  We also cordially invite any parents who have volunteered this year to our volunteer luncheon, which will be held from 11-12 on Friday. if you are able to attend both or either event, please respond to the RSVP at the end of this message, or return the paper invitation RSVP that will be sent home with students tomorrow. all RSVP's are asked to be returned by Wednesday so we can get an accurate count for our guests.  We look forward to seeing you there!

     

    Friday evening, please join us for our Annual Talent Show-We've got Talent at WGMS!   it will begin at 6pm in the Multipurpose room- Admission is $1 for students and families- 6 and under are free.

     

    Teacher Appreciation begins next Monday, May 6th- please plan to honor our teachers and staff next week- you can use the flyer that will go home with students as a guide to show your thanks!

    Students who attended Saturday Academy on Saturday have earned a jeans day on Monday or Tuesday of this week. These students have also earned a HW pass. Saturday Academy will resume on Saturday, May 4th.

     

    Report Cards were sent home with students who did not attend Student Led Conferences on last Friday.  Parents, please sign and return the copy and we will send home the formal copy.

     

    Tiger Athletics for this week:

    4/15 – Baseball/Softball at home vs Kiser at 4:45

    Sign up sheets have gone home for families and friends to sign up for our Annual Red Cross blood drive which will be held on Tuesday, April 16th after school. Any student who gets someone to register for the blood drive AND donate will be able to receive a SMOD free day on the next school day (Wed, April 17th).

     

    8th grade field trip will be held Tuesday 4/16 through Thursday 4/18.  There will be school in session for 8th grade students who do not attend the trip.

     

    Late buses will run on Wednesday, April 16th, but they will not run on Thursday, April 17th.

     

    Spring Break will begin on Friday April 19th through Friday, April 26th.  Students will return to school on Monday, April 29th.

     

    Wednesday, May 1st will be a teacher workday.  June 11th is now a regular school day.

     

    Save the date- On May 4th, 2019 at 1pm there will be a Diabetes walk on campus! Registration for individuals is $10 and registration is $25 to register a team (max of 5 per team or an additional $5 for each member) All proceeds will go toward the NDI initiative to the American Diabetes Association. We will have a walk, health fair, fun and games for all family and friends. This is open to the public! To register please contact Ms. O'Neal! We would like to challenge all youth groups, teams, organizations etc to come out and participate and help us Step out Diabetes!!

    Congratulations to 6th grade, who won the discipline challenge for the month of March by reducing their infractions below their baseline- as a result, they have earned a SMOD free day on Monday 4/8.  7th and 8th grade, we look forward to your joining 6th grade during the month of April!

     

    Students who attended Saturday Academy on Saturday have earned a jeans day on Monday or Tuesday of this week. These students have also earned a HW pass.

     

    Saturday Academy will be held April 13th from 9am-12pm for ELA, Math and 8th grade science support. All 6th grade slots are full- 7th and 8th grade have openings, and can submit their forms this week to participate. Transportation will be available for students who are currently in the WGMS bus zone, however, at this point, students will be provided bus transportation only with established stops that have already submitted applications or by car transportation.     The following are announcements for the week of March 31st, 2019:

    All current 5th graders who are projected to attend WGMS during the 2019-20 School year are invited to our Rising 6th Grade Parents Meeting on the campus of Western Guilford Middle School.

    The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, 2019 in the WGMS Multipurpose Room

    Musical Program: 6:00 – 6:30

    Program: 6:30 – 7:30

    We welcome you to a short program about the dynamic things happening at Western Guilford Middle School followed by a question and answer session and short school tour.

    Tigers Got Talent is coming to you May 3rd! Auditions for the talent show will be held afterschool on  Wednesday, April 3rd. Be sure to stop by Mrs. Webster’s or Mrs. Wise’s room for information

    OneCard is the GCS student identification and access card that will be sent home with students who were enrolled by November 2018 this week. One card provides many functions, including school attendance, identification, media center check out, cafeteria purchase, public school access and more.  Much more information is provided in the letter that will go home to parents on Monday, in our April Newsletter, and our website. Please ensure that students wear their OneCard and lanyard to school each day beginning Tuesday, April 2nd per GCS guidelines.
