    The following are announcements for the week of 2-2-2020

    Students received their 2nd quarter report cards this past Friday 1/31.  Please sign and return them on Monday.  

    This week in WGMS Athletics:

    2/3- Wrestling vs. Kiser at home at 5:00

    2/3- Girl’s Basketball at Kiser at 4:45

    2/3- Boy’s Basketball at Kiser at 6:00

     

    Wednesday, February 5th is Career Day.  Students are welcome to dress for success with professional dress- no tight or inappropriate dress is permissible.  Students are asked to tuck in and press their SMOD and wear belts tj be prepared to meet our guests.  8th graders will be interviewed by community guests.  


    All parents and adults over 18 are invited to participate in our Annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross this Thursday, February 6th from 3-6 pm.  Students who invite a guest that participates will earn a smod free pass.


    The Here Comes the Bus app is here- go to your App Store to download the free app  and track your child’s but in real time.  Your child must be assigned to a bus to track them.  If they are not, please go online to register them to the correct bus.  The school district code is 87491.

    This week in WGMS Athletics:

    2/1- Wrestling Conference Tournament at Ragsdale HS

     

    Reminder- students must leave campus and return for sporting events or evening school events.  They cannot stay afterschool until the event begins. If your child is staying for an event, please be sure they have a ride to pick them up approximately 90 minutes after the event begins. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Thank you for your support of WGMS athletics!

     

     

    Report cards will be distributed to students on Friday, January 31st. Please sign and return on Monday 2/3.  We will also distribute gold cards for the 3rd nine weeks to students on Friday, As a reminder, students who have had no D's or F's, no more than 2 unexcused absences, and no ISS, OSS, or ASD will earn a gold card.  Privileges include but aren't limited to jeans on Friday, front of the line pass, and discounted dance tickets from PTA. Let's keep working so that every students qualifies for a gold card! :-)

     

     

    Thank you so much to the parents and community  members who have committed to presenting at our 5th Annual Career Day!  We are still seeking volunteers to interview our 8th graders from 12-3 on Wednesday, February 5th- if you are interested, please email the Career Day from to Ms. Miller at millerr3@gcsnc.com or contact the front desk.

    The following are announcements for the week of 1/19/2020

     

    There will be no school tomorrow, Monday, January 20th, 2020  in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

     

    There will be no school for students on Tuesday, January 21st 2020- it is a teacher workday.   There will be a PTA meeting on Tuesday 1/21 at 6pm- in the media center- all are invited to plan how to support our students and staff.

     

    Our Annual Career Day will be held on Wednesday, February 5th from 12-3.  Final call for presenters- we must have all commitment forms by the end of the day on Wednesday, January 22nd.  We can continue to accept volunteers to interview 8th grade students through February 5th- please return all commitment forms to the front office or email them to Ms. Miller at millerr3@gcsnc.com .  All students who recruit a volunteer will receive a jeans pass- we look forward to seeing you!

     

    Wednesday will be the first day of our 2nd semester and the 1st day of the 3rd quarter.  Students will receive copies of their 2nd semester encore schedules in their homeroom classes on Wednesday. 

     

    7th and 8th grade students will continue with interim assessments on Wednesday, January 22nd, and Thursday January 23rd.  Please be sure students are at school on time.

     

    Friday, January 24th is a SMOD free day.  Students can participate with 12 Leaderchips.  There will be a PTA dance on Friday evening- admission is $5 and concessions will be sold.  Tickets will also be on sale Friday, January 24th during lunch for $4- save $1 and purchase your ticket early!

    Admission for students is $3 and for adults is $5. Please enter the building for athletic contests in the entrance by the baseball/softball fields. Students must leave campus and return for games- be sure to have rides scheduled for pick up by no later than 7:15pm.

     

    Plans are underway for our 5th Annual Career Day here at Western Guilford Middle School to be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.  Thank you for your consideration as a participant. 

     

    There are two ways in which you can volunteer your time.

     

    1. Conducting mock job interviews with 8th graders and providing them with feedback.
    2. Presenting a workshop in a classroom setting on a specific career, job seeking skill or leadership development topic.

     

    Letters went home with students last week- any student who recruits a volunteer will receive a jeans day pass.  If you can participate, please return the form your received, call our front desk, or email Ms. Miller at millerr3@gcsnc.com

     

    Students will be involved in interim assessments this week and next week. Please be sure that students are at school every day on time.  The end of the quarter is this Friday, please be sure students have turned in any missing work by the deadlines that teachers have established.

     

    It's January, and our students are growing!  Please consider donating gently used, clean smod pants in khaki, navy, black or gray, or smod (collared shirts) especially in the following sizes:

    Girls:

    Pants: 12-18-girls

    Juniors Pants: 0-14

    Shirts: XS-XL

     

    Boys:

    Pants: 12-20-boys

    Mens Pants: 28-40

    Shirts: XS-XL

     

    Students who donate SMOD by 1/31 will be entered into a drawing. Please contact our counselors or social workers for more information.

    The following are announcements for the week of January 5th, 2020.

     

    Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a restful, fun winter break. School will resume tomorrow, Monday, January 6th at regular time.  We are looking forward to welcoming back all of our Tiger Leaders!   If you remembered to read for our GCS Winter Break Reading Challenge, please submit your logs to Ms. Denny on Monday for a prize!

     

    This week in Tiger Athletics:

    Students, be reminded that you must leave campus, then return for athletic events if you plan to attend.

     

    Late buses will resume on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Wednesday, January 8th.

     

    We will begin 2nd quarter interim assessments during the week of January 10th, so be sure to be at school on time each day!

    The following are announcements for the week of December 15th:

    Our Athletic Department’s candy fundraiser is coming to a close this week. If your child participated in the fundraiser but has not turned in their candy money to their first encore teacher, please have them do that by this Thursday. Thank you so much for your support of Tiger athletics.

    There will be a WGMS Leadership Team meeting on Tuesday, December 17th at 3:30pm.  all are welcome to attend.

    PTA is seeking assistance with the Staff Holiday luncheon on Thursday 12/19, and the lead breakfast on 12/20. If you are available to volunteer, please contact the front desk or complete the Sign up Genius on our WGMS website.

    Our lead blocks are collecting spare change to support our United Way Campaign- all Lead blocks who participate in helping us meet our $500 goal will earn a SMOD free day on 12/19- $2 per student will help us meet our goal!

    On Friday, December 20th we will celebrate our regular SMOD free day- students can participate for 11 Leaderchips.  Students who have earned SMOD free are also invited to participate in Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest- prizes will be awarded!

    We will be in school each day this week, and we encourage students to be at school on time.

    School will be closed for students Monday, December 23rd through Friday, January 3rd.  Students will return to classes on Monday, January 6th.

    There will be a PTA Planning meeting on Monday, December 9th at 6pm. All are welcome to come and plan events to support our students, teachers and staff!

     

    Our Winter Music Concerts will be held this week!

    Tuesday 12/10- 6th, 7th and 8th grade Chorus

    Wednesday 12/11- 6th, 7th and 8th grade Band

    Thursday 12/12- 6th, 7th and 8th grade Orchestra

    Call time for musicians is 5:45pm.  The concerts will begin at 6:30 pm.  We appreciate your support!

    Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break- those who remembered to read, please turn in your reading logs to Ms. Denny to be eligible for a special prize!

    Interim reports will go home with students on Tuesday, December 3rd. Students will receive interims from each core and encore class. Please sign them and return them on Wednesday.

    The following are announcements for the week of November 24th 2019

     

    Congratulations to our Tiger Leaders who earned Gold Cards this quarter!  To earn a gold card, students must have: No ISS, OSS or After School Detention, No more than 2 unexcused absences, and no D’s or F’s on report cards during the 1st nine weeks.  Gold card are effective- 11/22/19 through 1/17/20

    Privileges:

    1)            Jeans each Friday (or the last day of the week)

    2)            Fast Pass to jump ahead in lines

    3)            1 HW Pass per quarter

    4)            1 candy exchange

    5)            $3 PTA Dance tickets for duration of Gold Card

    Guidelines-

    • The Golden Tiger must be wearing the Gold Card Lanyard at the time of usage
    • If the Gold Card Lanyard is misplaced, all privileges are revoked for the remainder of the time frame
    • If a student incurs a discipline infraction (ISS, OSS, or ASD), they will lose the Gold Card Lanyard immediately, and they are not eligible for the next “Gold Card” Period

     

    Work hard to keep or earn your gold card status- we are looking for even more Tiger Leaders to earn gold cards during the next nine weeks! 😊

     

    Schools will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday Wednesday, November 27th through November 29th. On behalf of the entire WGMS family, we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!

    The following are announcements for the week of November 17th:

     

    On last Friday, students received reprinted report cards that reflected any grade changes from the 1st quarter.  If you have questions, please contact the office.

     

    Wrestling tryouts will begin tomorrow immediately after school.  All students who are trying out must bring an up to date physical and an up to date concussion form.  Their eligibility will be checked after school and those students who are eligible will be permitted to practice.  Please be sure students are picked up by 5:00pm on the Lindley Rd/Bus side of campus.

     

    The WGMS Leadership/Lighthouse Team will meet at 3:30pm tomorrow, Monday 11/18.
    The WGMS PTA will host a planning meeting at 6pm. All are welcome!

    Friday November 22nd will be a SMOD Free day- students will need 9 LEADerchips to participate. Please review the SMOD free guidelines- remember-no holes in jeans or slides are permitted.


    On Friday 11/22, Guilford Parent Academy will host a Parent Academy presentation of How to help your children with HW- to learn more about Free HW Help resources in GCS from 8-8:30am.  Light Refreshments will be served- All are welcome!


    Friday, PTA will also host the PTA Dance from 6-8pm.  Presale tickets will be available during lunch on Friday for $4- tickets will be $5 at the door. Concessions will also be sold.

     

    PTA is seeking volunteers for Friday's LEAD Kindness Breakfast and for Friday's Dance.  If you are interested, please email kellig80@yahoo.com or complete the sign up genius posted on our WGMS website.

     

     

    Important message:

     

    Parents, in light of the recent school shooting in Santa Clarita California, we are reviewing our safety protocols.  Parents and visitors can only enter the building at the main entrance- when entering, please be prepared to show ID.  Please remind your children if they see something, say something. Our school administration, school SRO, and GCS Safety Office treat every possible threat very seriously, and follow up with local law enforcement and with appropriate consequences for students who have made threatening statements per the GCS Student Handbook as necessary. Please discuss this with your children. Contact an administrator or SRO Blount if you have any questions.  We appreciate your partnership in keeping our school community safe.
