    Welcome to the Southwest Library Media Center. I'm Taylor Pickens, and I love being the Media Specialist for Southwest Elementary. I received my undergraduate degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I worked as a Primary Reading Teacher at Kernersville Elementary before pursuing my master’s degree in Library Science. I received my Masters from UNCG in Library and Information Studies in 2019. This is my sixth year at Southwest and I love calling the ranch my home!

    The Southwest Elementary Library Media Center seeks to create a welcoming and accessible physical space that facilitates active learning, promotes participation and collaboration and teamwork, and provides that is representative of the community, and delivering literacy instruction to all students.

    Here are some important things to know about our Library Media Center:

    How often do students visit the library?

    There is open circulation every morning from 7:00 until the bell rings or 7:30. We have the morning show in the media center every morning and it begins at 7:25. Not only that, but every class comes once a week at their designated special time to check out books during media class.

    How many books can be checked out at a time?

    Kindergarten - 1 book

    First Grade - 1 book, following Winter Break 2 books

    Second- 2 books

    Third-Fourth- 3 books

    Fifth Grade: 4 books

    When are books returned to the library?

    Students may keep borrowed library books for two weeks.  After that time, all books are considered overdue by our computer system. Students may return books to the library at their regular library class time or throughout the day.  Helpers will come around every morning to collect media books.
